Using AI to write essays doesn't help students. It makes them less capable. You can't help *whatever marginalized student population you're pretending to care about* by lowering the standards you should be helping your students to meet. That is actually harmful to them!

If you think stopping people from using AI to write essays is more important than preventing harm against neurodivergent and students who are english language learners then you've lost the plot. Once again white people would prefer to be cops than community members.

Probably no more than 10% of the American professoriate are unreconstructed Marxists. Many more are Marxist-adjacent and like to strike the pose.
The more interesting fact is that in 2026 most academic departments would be more comfortable hiring a Marxist than a Republican.

@BrandonWarmke It is true there is political homogeneity in many departments, and that it excludes Republicans, but it also excludes Marxists, who are a teeny tiny fraction of professors.

Bezos is playing a dirty little libertarian trick here. Amazon has been sucking up public money for decades—its entire business model is based on diverting billions away from schools and other public needs. Bezos’ profits were literally built on public austerity!

The warming projections that freaked the world out then are all now effectively baked in. Things could get much worse from there. RCP8.5 has not looked plausible as an emissions future for some time — as I wrote in 2019, and again in 2022 — but we are far from out of the woods.

It’s a beautiful, cool morning in New England, a relief from 2 90-degree days. Was enjoying my windows open + birdsong but just shut all windows due to landscaping noise. American landscaping is a scourge. Noise and toxic fumes shouldn’t be the norm in our communities!

@CompletedStreet Europeans tend to place greater value on a connection with the outside world and on experiencing what used to be a quite lovely climate, whereas Americans have long been taught to value (and are marketed) constant climate control. Car culture is part of the story too.

I'm an urban gardener. I love it but it cuts food costs about as much as an urban horse would cut transportation costs. It's somewhere between "expensive hobby" and "ostentatious display of wealth—like the tapis vert of Louis XIV. The best use of urban land is growing *people.*

This entire meme is a fantasy. RCP 8.5 was a worst case scenario that animated some stories. It’s now thankfully avoided. It was never the basis dor Sunrise, GND, etc. Meanwhile, projections on current policies put us around 2.5C to 3C warming, which would be pretty catastrophic.
