The left holds Paris. Emmanuel Grégoire is new mayor, succeeding Anne Hidalgo. He beat the right by about 51%-40% say estimates. Many factors mattered, but clear that voters endorsed left's transformation of Paris into biking city. See my @FT column as.ft.com/r/7840a393-8fb…

Now hours deep into the blackout. Even in the center of Havana, only a few lights out there, where people have managed to hook up generators or solar batteries. No city is ever supposed to look like this, and the U.S. has done it to Cuba intentionally.

Spoke to Roberto, who runs a little bookshop in Havana- he says people are keeping meat from their fridges in piles of salt when the power goes, and when it comes back abruptly, he's worried the fuses and coils in his appliances will blow. Just senseless cruelty by the U.S.

Zohran has internalized a rule of politics too many Dems have forgotten: You can’t assume people know about the good things you’re doing! You have to tell them about it, over and over again.

Can’t be emphasized enough that getting so many cars out of Paris was achieved over 2 decades by an alliance of socialists and greens.

@ear2thepavement as does driving on roads and highways with potholes, poor signage, emergency closures, road-rage-filled and just bad/distracted/rushed drivers, cars w/out mufflers, and so on.

Good thread. I’d add: transit exposes people to a broad swath of humanity, & that’s a net social positive! But that reality means transit also exposes us to the failings of other societal systems unrelated to transit, like housing + mental health. There’s a bigger picture!
Jarrett Walker@humantransit

If you're not a transit manager, it sounds so easy to fix the problem of crime and bad behavior on public transit. Even worse, it's easy to accuse transit managers of not caring if they don't solve it. That's not fair. They do care. 1/🧵

@legithillbilly A big part of the issue is that we’ve killed all those bugs’ natural predators with lawn chemicals and by using extreme tools like leaf blowers, which destroy habitat (leaf cover) essential for insect life cycles.

@ear2thepavement I’m sorry, but mosquito and tick populations are out of control compared to decades ago. I can’t even go outside in the south for any period of time anymore and usually wear long sleeves and pants in the heat of summer to avoid bites that occur seconds after going out.

I keep trying to tell leftist, Muslim, and antiwar friends of mine who are increasingly consuming Tucker/Candace/Kelly content etc (🤦🏽‍♂️) not to exaggerate the MAGA splits or the ‘MAGA antiwar movement’. The vast majority remain in a pro-Trump cult and will back whatever he does.

Emmanuel Grégoire has won the race to succeed Anne Hidalgo, the transformational leader since 2014, as the next Mayor of Paris. He’s pledged to build on her legacy, continuing the expansion of the City's bike network & growing the city’s network of neighborhood green spaces. 🇫🇷

@Chris_arnade Cherry-picking examples of bad (and rare) situations on public transit when personal mobility products on American roads are responsible for the overwhelming number of people killed and maimed by our transportation system is the height of manipulation and disinformation.

Every transit nerd — the urbanist who tell us over and over how much they love public transportation— has to realize until you stop this sort of crap, and make stopping it your number one goal, you and all your train love are doing nothing but annoying everyone else.
