IRS net migration data is out of 2023: 🔴 Red states gained $37.2 billion in income and 492k filers. 🔵 Blue states lost ~$40.8B and 520k filers. CA −$11.9B, NY −$9.9B, IL −$6.0B, MA −$4.2B, NJ −$2.8B.

People ask about muni’s and I typically don’t have much to say. But now, looking at the deficits caused by absurd spending, and tax policies accelerating revenue erosion, I can say avoid all General Obligation muni’s in California, Illinois & New York. I’ve never bought a GO.

My tipping point was early 2020, after Trudeau was re-elected. I realized the federal government plays a relatively small role in daily life, yet Alberta sends massive wealth east while the rest of Canada keeps electing governments that hold us back. That was the moment I concluded the arrangement is fundamentally one-sided and Alberta would be more prosperous on its own.

The New York Governor, who told hefty tax payers a while ago to “go to Florida where you belong” is now begging the same ex-taxpayers to come back to New York and pay taxes they left New York to not pay.
Because it’s “the right thing to do”.
