I was talking to my mom about some of the things we're building, and she reminded me of this drawing I made when I was 12 or 13. Spider-Man in the foreground, a cityscape behind him, and the tallest building says "Eben's Marvel Comics." I was a Marvel Zombie at that age. Marvel just meant comics to me. What I was really drawing was "Eben's Comics Company." I wanted my own place where comics came from. The building has a different name on it now but the ambition is exactly the same. Fate? Just might be.

Webtoon proved something important: mobile-native comics can reach massive audiences. It also proved that the creator economics can be brutal. The format works. The business model doesn't work for the people making the comics. Somebody needs to fix that second part.

I wore a full Superman costume every day for years as a kid - cape, tights, everything. I went to restaurants as Superman. I went to the Nutcracker Ballet as Superman. I went EVERYWHERE as Superman. When my school made me stop, I wore it under my clothes and changed after school. My own personal Clark Kent to Superman moment every day. I'm kind of still doing that. Just with a comics platform instead of a cape 👀...

Marvel Knights. Harley Quinn. Painkiller Jane. @jpalmiotti has worked for every major publisher in comics. But the work I want to talk about is something you might have missed - Independent. Creator-owned. And one of the most unique and compelling things I've read in years.

I still think How to Draw the Marvel Way is one of the best how to books for comic books.

Most "digital comics platforms" are just PDF viewers with a payment form. Scan the physical pages. Put them on a screen. Charge money. Call it digital. That's just a photograph of a physical product. Real digital comics should be native to the screen you're reading them on.

CREATOR ADVICE If you’re a new or experienced creator, treat every comic book contract,no matter the company’s size,as something that must be reviewed by a lawyer. Some companies don’t have your best interests in mind, and many use generic or AI‑generated contracts that aren’t tailored to your situation with expectations you will edit them. A qualified attorney protects your rights, ensures transparency in accounting, and secures your ability to audit the company if needed. I keep hearing about creators getting taken advantage of, and this is the only reliable way to protect yourself. The more experienced the lawyer is with entertainment or publishing contracts, the better. If you’re creating new characters for a larger company, always request co‑ownership and creator‑share paperwork. They will not offer it—you have to ask. Some companies may offer a buyout, but every detail must be in writing. Handshake deals don’t hold up in court, and in my experience, companies often deny they ever happened. Slow down, get everything documented, and protect your work. Be smart. Learn from others mistakes, not your own.

Say yes and figure it out. The most important thing I ever learned, I learned by lying to Nissan.

Comics don't have a content problem. There are thousands of incredible creators making incredible work right now. Comics have a distribution problem. No infrastructure to connect that work to the people who'd love it. That's what we're building at @macroverse

Here's something that surprises people: Comics are the only major entertainment format with no way to distribute where audiences already are. Music goes everywhere. Video goes everywhere. Podcasts go everywhere. But if you make a comic, your options are: hope someone finds your website or hand over your work to a walled garden app. There's no equivalent of putting your work inside a blog post, a newsletter, a storefront. Comics are locked behind specific apps and specific URLs. If someone doesn't already know where to find you, they won't. I've been thinking about this since I built one of the first digital comics readers on the iPad in 2010. We lost that race to comiXology. But comiXology never solved the distribution problem. They just built a better bookstore and Amazon shut it down. The idea that comics need to go where readers already are, instead of making readers come to comics, has been sitting in my head for 15 years. We've been building something at @macroverse that changes this. More soon...
