One of the biggest mistakes we make in thinking about enterprise AI Agents is imagining that they will primarily be aimed at going after the exact same things we already do today with software or people. It’s much easier to imagine an existing TAM getting moved around instead of growth coming from all new areas. But in practice, many of the biggest AI Agents opportunities will be in areas that are currently considered “non consumption”; where agents get deployed to solve net new problems for the customer that they weren’t spending on previously. The core misunderstanding stems from the idea that most companies are somehow perfectly optimized in most functions, and the company is already spending what they need or can to accomplish the tasks at hand. When in reality, a significant portion of work today is actually bottlenecked by something else internal or external to the organization. This bottleneck could be resources, availability of talent, budgets, getting more customers, slowdowns of systems, or anything else. This is where some of the biggest potential of enterprise AI Agents will come from. Because of their elastic capacity, AI Agents give an organization the ability to augment and automate work in areas they weren’t able to spend on previously - or in areas where they were unnecessarily resource constrained to solve. We’re already seeing this dynamic playing out in some of the fastest growing areas of AI. At Box, for instance, we’re seeing customers begin to automate work or use AI agents to get intelligence from data that no human was doing manually before — it’s entirely new use cases for the organization. Similarly, with the growth of AI coding agents, a significant portion of spend will go into building software that just wouldn’t have been made before — not replacing existing coders. We can imagine the same dynamics playing out in legal work, where startups or large companies with constrained resources accelerate reviews with AI Agents, and just move business processes forward faster. Or new agents in areas like testing, security, marketing, or sales that deliver net new work to an organization. This is going to be a massive opportunity for anyone building AI Agents, and will be responsible for much of the upside in AI.
