@mrillig I think it is reasonable to send samples out for routine and time-consuming analysis. My idea is that one student should must one skill, know everything about it, and that is enough. Save time for more important questions, don't learn too many skills.

Check out our new paper in Nature Communications! nature.com/articles/s4146… I collected four years of continuous GHG fluxes to quantify importance hot moments of N2O emissions from continuous alfalfa agriculture. < 1% of measurements accounted for up to 57% of annual emissions!
