@emollick Really appreciate this! Especially relevant for depicting group differences that can lead to stereotyping, e.g. culture/ethnicity/gender-- how to communicate both "culture is an important influence" and also "but doesn't make everyone in a cultural group the same?"

We are visualizing our data all wrong. Typically, academic graphs show statistical confidence intervals or standard errors. This paper shows that everyone from doctors to tenured faculty misread these graphs, assuming effects are larger. Show variability! jakehofman.com/pdfs/illusion-…

@StevenHeine4 Rakuten in Hong Kong should be minimum price ~$1000USD ; sample skews quite old. SoJump (wjx.cn) in mainland China will be based on the # of items, prices are close to US minimum wage I think. Requires a mainland China collaborator. :)

Cross-cultural researchers: What recommendations do you have for affordable online platforms to collect data from adults from diverse industrialized countries? We’re hoping to gather data from around 20 countries and the quotes we’ve been getting are crazy expensive. Thanks!

@wgervais I sometimes hear complaints about Markus & Kitayama creating stereotypes and dichotomous cultural categories and exaggerating differences, for example. But were they helpful, and how do we get psychologists to do more in-depth work to find and understand cultural differences?

@wgervais In cultural psy, the problem I personally struggle with is that simplifying cultural differences, and "complexifying" them, both feel like they can cause harm.

@wgervais I'm puzzling over this because it's similar to doing cultural psychology (or, perhaps, any research)-- I think it's harder to get a message across that there ARE cultural differences, and to get cited, if I emphasize complexity and within-culture diversity.

@wgervais Why does it happen-- do you have a theory / some theories? I'm wondering if part of it is that nuanced critiques are more difficult to understand, and punchy review papers cite other punchy review papers because they make their point more easily?

@grigolus Wow! I love seeing this "new to me" cultural-heritage dimension: post-communist vs. capitalist. Congratulations on the award & amazing research-- and yes, hoping for a better research-teamwork world ASAP! Keep up the amazing work...

Just arrived. This study was a collaborative effort of 16 researchers from 11 countries, including Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. Just can’t wait when this madness is over, Putin is in a ditch somewhere, and we can live, breathe, and do science again.
