@moirahough @deepdivewhales @blacksciblog Check out USAjobs. Also, take care to match the language in the job ads so your application doesn’t get tossed aside in the first round. The initial screeners aren’t subject experts and may not recognize that water stress pertains to drought, for example.

@deepdivewhales @blacksciblog Would you be willing to share how you got there? Do govt agencies advertise for scientists or do you have to know the right people or...?

Scientists' options are not just industry or academia. Sound off below with what you do that isn't one of these areas.

@rochellehd Also, everyone who is in a position to write a letter has had to ask for letters of support. It feels good to pay it forward for someone at an earlier career stage. Especially if they make it easy for you.

@rochellehd It helps to make it easy. Ask well ahead of the deadline. Provide detailed info and instructions. Send any application materials you can (esp. pers. essays and CVs). I’ve written draft letters for recommenders to fill out.

@krissylyon I don’t usually reply to Twitter posts from people I don’t know, but the resemblance is too uncanny. He’s named after a protein, so go figure.

@kheyduk Isn’t the defining trait of parallel lines that they *never* converge? Not that the mathematical definition should strictly apply in all contexts, but it makes the term “parallel” confusing to me in this one.

@_jbenning Agreed. I don’t think solar/wind/etc are enough to displace coal and natural gas.

@echinaceaderm definitely re: security. both waste and decentralization seem like solvable problems with enough R&D investment (I know Gates has been working on this)...I'm just increasingly feeling like we can't take nuclear off the table if we want to hit any effectual emissions goals

what/where are the best arguments *against* investing in nuclear as an essential part of the transition toward clean energy?

@ShanKothari I disagree with that premise. Shading (including self-shading) is a major carbon constraint. Arid conditions also limit carbon acquisition, since opening stomata means losing water. And acquiring other nutrients entails a high carbon cost from roots, exudates, and etc.

Some plant ecologists insist that plant growth is almost never carbon-limited (instead limited by direct constraints on growth) One thing I never understood about this perspective: If that's *almost always* the case, why don't plants just... build fewer leaves?

Portland is about to be national news again because a man was killed here last night. This means that the entire Republican apparatus is going to activate and opine about what happened and what should be done in a city they've never visited. So here is one local's perspective.
