Controversial take: you don't need any of this. LLMs have gone through a lot of training already, so there ought to be a better method to turn them into extremely good embedding models. This is what my group has been working on. LLM2Vec is one such idea. We have some exciting developments recently where LLMs themselves can generate superior embeddings with zero changes to the LLM. Stay tuned!

inventing highly data efficient models is very much a function of building interesting model architectures and/or approaches that aren't completely obvious (for a very simple version of this see sjoshi804.github.io/data-efficient…)

@amytam01 Improvements you are talking about and the edges you are describing are not research though, they are elite world class implementation

I met a founder today who said he writes 10,000 lines of code a day now thanks to AI. This is probably the limit case. He's a hotshot programmer, he knows AI tools very well, and he's talking about a 12 hour day. But he's not naive. This is not 10,000 lines of bug-filled crap.

the language of affirmation and inclusion is failing us in this moment. trans people don’t need gender markers to “affirm” the gender we “identify as”. accurate sex/gender markers are needed for our protection, physical safety, and access to basic services and rights.

Forcing trans people to revert gender markers means they will immediately be outed in any interaction that requires an ID- renting an apt, starting a job, applying for a bank account, every interaction w police. This enables discrimination+can put trans people in physical danger
