even in az (no daylight savings) we’ve hit the bed-by-day time of year and the 7yo loves this reminder: In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day. I have to go to bed and see The birds still hopping on the tree, Or hear the grown-up people's feet Still going past me in the street. And does it not seem hard to you, When all the sky is clear and blue, And I should like so much to play, To have to go to bed by day?

Alright kids, brush your teeth! Time to get ready for bed! But it’s still daylight outside. :( I know, but it’s bed time. What’s the point of having more daylight if we can’t even stay up to enjoy it? Sorry, you’ve got to go bed so we can all wake up in the dark tomorrow.

@eckiam the "money illusion" is the root of so much dysfunction, Boomer and otherwise.

i think this is the boomer disconnection - costs really did rise because “growth” requires inflation they experience the fruit of their investments, but when you tell them you give your kids $5-$10/mo for an allowance they say “wow my parents would never. they only gave me .50 and it was a big deal when i got $1” which is the same amount adjusted for inflation ive tried to explain this 1,000 times, and even brilliant boomer minds don’t quite grasp it. too hard to reconcile

@Graham_Mark_E yeah but tbf it probably breaks even when you account for car maintenance etc that increases when you drive everywhere. i spent more eating out when i lived in a (proper walkable) city, but less in other areas

@eckiam Yeah. Fast food is cheap, but it adds up fast if you are talking a whole family often. It is hard for us because we have always lived right downtown in both cities we've lived in, so the temptation of fast food is always a short walk in every direction. So much wasted money.

@Graham_Mark_E my grandparents still only order at a fast food place if it has a dollar menu ha some thriftiness is good bc mcdonalds just isn't an option for a whole family (beyond the food quality conversation). we only do in-and-out bc we know we can feed the family for $22 or so

@eckiam I have a hard time adjusting my mind to inflation, too. The price of a Big Mac combo disturbs me greatly nowadays, even though I know that it is relative to the price when I was a teenager.

they seem to be able to get there with bigger inflation moves. my grandfather will say "i used to work a summer and it would pay my whole college tuition, you young kids just can't do that anymore". but it doesn't translate to thinks like health care, basic costs of living etc

note to self: adjust giving by 3% each year to account for inflation lest i fall into the same trap

@eckiam Like when boomers with money only put 5 or 10 dollars into the collection plate at church when an hour of minimum wage work is over $15 now. 😂

@Graham_Mark_E exactly. and tbf i have a difficult time with the increase from even 10 years ago... so i suspect this is why their gifts and giving have stayed the same since 1990.

I read that encouraging kids to read mystery novels naturally sets them up to read more deeply -- because you have to in order to figure it out. I thought that was good advice. Gonna get my kids some Agatha Christie

I have a bunch of these awesome robot learning toys in a box, but we can't use them because the younger children exercise a veto over all complicated activities. Do it in a different room? It would be like "night of the living dead" if the zombies could scream.
