@ecmulwray

I wrote a fantasy series during a year of quarantine, so I guess I'm officially an aspiring writer. Official writing/editing account: @dashcommadotorg

Now that the casting for James Bond is on again, I'll just note again, as I did some years ago, that the character is, and must be, a white male. theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar…

I will never understand or forgive or get past this hypocrisy. From Tia Levings’ book “A Well-Trained Wife”.

@DuskMoth5 @SketchesbyBoze "in line with our modern understanding" would be the anachronistic part. I only mentioned it because I was very excited a few weeks ago when Boze tweeted about anachronistic ideas in historical fiction, which has been a fascination for me since I watched...Black Sails. 😳

@ecmulwray @SketchesbyBoze Regarding point 2, there were specific allusions to Mary Bennet's social ineptitude in Pride & Prejudice so this new drama series interprets Mary's character with less ridicule in line with our modern understanding of "nerds" and the like.

Boze Herrington, Library Owl 😴🧙‍♀️
There’s a moment in the TV series The Other Bennet Sister where Mary Bennet is caught reading at a ball; moments later she corrects the grammar of a man flirting with her (“it’s fewer oysters, not less”) and I’m not sure I’ve ever been more accurately represented by a character.

@senatorshoshana @JonahDispatch What has been lost--what nobody seems to want to say, lest they accuse the sincere people--is the use of truth as a metric of moral evaluation. You can sincerely believe that you should lock your child in a closet, but you have access to enough evidence to know that you are wrong

@senatorshoshana @JonahDispatch I'm actually really struggling with word choice, because authenticity implies a certain degree of "real". I don't think you can live with authenticity if you are fundamentally intellectually dishonest. On the other hand, you can be wholly sincere in holding wrong beliefs...🤔

@neon_heartbeat I was thinking disempowering / demoralizing / mortifying (also with the historical connotation). Castrating / crippling get more at the anatomical (I genuinely think we should bring back metaphorical usages of cripple). I like enfeebling tho. 🎉

The closest thing you could really choose would be "neutering" or "enfeebling" or maybe "devitalizing". "Unnerve" might work if it didn't have a modern connotation of fear/horror.

@neon_heartbeat I had so many of these moments in my early twenties, but probably the funniest was when I was like, "What movie had the crocodile singing?", and I remembered, and I looked up a YouTube video...and then I started sobbing uncontrollably for reasons I still don't understand. 🤷‍♀️

I didn’t know whether to mention what’s been happening on social media, but it feels wrong to start posting as normal again. Three weeks ago we had a sudden bereavement in our family, it’s turned my world upside down. Yesterday I drew again for the first time since.

I still write things long hand. I print things out to edit them. I ask friends to manually look at my work. I still want to live in a world where those skills are necessary, and valued, but man.
