@christianwolmar What business case? There isn’t one. What’s the anticipated ticket / fare price? Will it only be afforded as a business travel service?

@darwent_charles So @ZacGoldsmith the U.K. plans to plant 30,000 hectares of trees a year FROM 2030…. When just the Drax power station CURRENTLY consumes 203,000 hectares of trees a year…
English

Johnson’s tree planting strategy ‘in flames’, as UK spends six times more on wood burning power station - The Independent apple.news/A8vHDxuM8SK-dW…
English

@darwent_charles Essentially this one power station is burning trees covering the area of Surrey (1,920 Sq km) each year, to power just 4m homes.
English

@darwent_charles Ridiculous situation. How is burning 25m trees pa to power 4m homes sustainable? Cutting down carbon soaking trees, that’ll take 20++ years to be replaced. Coals better as more energy dense & mined within the earth - trees on surface are finite. Just capture coal emissions!!
English

@peterproperty Can’t read the article. Simplest & cheapest (financial & environmental, as should be a crime to waste good cladding materials) way to solve this, is install heat sensors in high rise buildings cavities. That would’ve detected the Grenfell fire when firemen couldn’t.
English

Times (£) Interesting update on where ministerial minds are on cladding solutions. One: send litigants down the legal maze to find a polluter who pays. Two: State insurance scheme. Neither, of course, solve immediate issues. thetimes.co.uk/article/the-tw…

@Andrew_Adonis Surely you should be asking, why 30% of those asked don’t have any idea or opinion?

@mark_lynas @ZacGoldsmith It’s a step in the right direction, but will mean the likes of #Bolsonaro will accelerate cutting down the #Amazon. At equivalent of 30 football pitches a minute being destroyed, that’s 4,204,800 pitches in 8 years. Unimaginable. But well done. 🙄🤦🏻♂️
English

This is the second piece of seriously good news from #COP26 after India's pledge. Ending deforestation is in some ways more important than stopping coal, as carbon from forest destruction is paired with incalculable loss of biodiversity and ecosystems.
English

@ZacGoldsmith Wonderful. So the likes of #Bolsonaro has 8 years to accelerate the Amazon’s destruction? The note states the equivalent of 30 football pitches of forest are destroyed each minute. In 8 years that’s 4,204,800 pitches… Good work. 🤦🏻♂️🤷♂️
English

@BorisJohnson @ZacGoldsmith @COP26 Oh please… a target date 8 years away, will ensure the likes of #Bolsonaro of #Brazil will accelerate chopping down the #Amazon. The forest, nor we, will not be able to tolerate such destruction of the eco system, habitat, & indigenous peoples.
English

Forests are the lungs of our planet.
Today @COP26, over 100 leaders representing 85% of the world's forests will take landmark action to end deforestation by 2030.
With this pledge, we have a chance to end humanity’s long history as nature’s conqueror, and become its custodian.
English

Tomorrow we will announce a package of unprecedented measures to stop deforestation and restore degraded land.
Each part of the package will reinforce the other.
And each part will be on a new scale. #cop26

@copenhenken @marksuttonbike @EuCyclistsFed @WCA_cycling @Chris_Boardman @theJeremyVine @UNWTO @WRIRossCities @BaldwinMatthew_ @SLOCATOfficial @TUMInitiative @BYCS_org Great to see the @FinancialTimes is cottoning on… however, the need for promotion of cycling isn’t a new one. The need to make it more attractive relative to vehicles, including EVs, is huge & urgent, & relatively low cap too. So why is Gov not doing more?
English

Electrification of the world's car fleet will not reduce our emissions fast enough. That's why we will be at #COP26. Because the world needs more cycling. Now! Below my piece in today's Financial Times. #COP26cycling.

English

@ZacGoldsmith Best thing anyone could do for the planet, is to put #Bolsonaro in a dark room. And keep him there. Until he becomes green.
English

Against the odds & in the face of terrible threats, indigenous people have been defending their environments for generations.
There is likely no better way to protect forests -& by extension ourselves- than backing them
These are the people who most need leaders to step up #cop26

English

@CampanaleMark @DonnachadhMc Rather daft comment. You drink from the metal can that coal smelted. You drink from the plastic bottle that oil produced. You avoided a chill from the gas you willingly burned. Leaders need do more constructive things. Like hold #Bolsonaro to account & stop the Amazon destruction
English

COP26 leaders must commit to ending new fossil fuel projects, says Vanessa Nakate. “Something that I always say is that we can’t eat coal, we can’t drink oil and we cannot breathe so-called natural gas.”

@Feargal_Sharkey Don’t just campaign against sewage dumping - come up with a viable solution!!! Such as anaerobic digestion plants, that can turn our sewage into energy - a double whammy solution… who’d have thought!! 🤦🏻♂️

@RHarrabin @Greenpeace All well and good to dismiss everything out of hand… but right now surely it’d be more constructive for Greenpeace to offer some viable solutions?
English

Bill payers will foot bill for new #nuclear, government announces. @greenpeace says "The funding model transfers huge financial risk from builders. In S Carolina, 18% of residents’ energy bills went to pay for a half-built reactor which has been abandoned and will never work"
