turns out the "bicycle of the mind" was more like a wheelchair for the mind... and now we're going to need treadmills for the mind.

@straceX The first Unix editor "ed" by Ken Thompson was so primitive that it worked on line basis (not by moving the cursor like in modern editors). Most current day users couldn't use ed at all, even if given the full manual. I also remember struggling with this and went the Emacs way.

@FauxmarJL @ThePrimeagen You can imagine my terror when I typed "nano", not found. "pico", not found. I was definitely not going to type "ed" so I had no choice but to type "vi"...

@ThePrimeagen Not joking: after avoiding it for nearly fifty years, I had to learn vi today because it was the only text editor available on a system. I thought you should know.

If you use org-mode in VSCode, you should be using Emacs If you use Doom or evil-mode in Emacs, you should be using Vim If you use Command mode in Vim you should be using ed(1) If you use ,p command in ed, you should be using a teletype If you use a tty, umm,... you win?
Stefan@schteppe

If you use unsafe{} in Rust, you should be writing C++ instead If you use a raw pointer in C++, you should be writing C instead If you use inline asm in C, you should be writing assembler instead

ed(1) is for God programmers who can remember what they're editing. Bloated and slow tools such as Emacs, NeoVim, Helix and so on are for inferiors who can't visualize the code they're working on. ? Click here to read more 👇🧵

@ayuninotayutu @GameDevJared89 As an intern taking care of a UNIX machine, I had a hard time getting used to 'vi', but at least it was full screen. One day a support guy came to do some work and fired up the line oriented 'ed' editor on a huge config file. Probably the fastest text editing I've ever seen. 😳

@ayuninotayutu @GameDevJared89 😂😂😂 But seriously... I didn't know how to edit files on UNIX. No internet so I had to check the many manuals on the shelf with everything from UNIX commands to MIPS assembler. I couldn't believe that I had to use ed but then I found vi. Never learned it properly though.

@EphHuit @Amystreet FWIW, this account has become mostly fallow here on Xitter, only checking in once or twice per fortnight. The vast majority of ed1conf activity (such as the current Edvent calendar) happens over on the fedi: @ed1conf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">bsd.network/@ed1conf where you're cordially invited.

@SudLanBo @zaydiscool777 Xitter has become a bit of a dumpster-fire, so I only drop in about once or twice per fortnight, since most of the folks I find interesting have moved over on Mastodon.

@ed1conf @zaydiscool777 Haven't seen ya much on here at all. Phones don't have enough storage to run every app I need to be a social media person. Sad state of things. Might as well just make a PC able to do phone stuff too and carry that in backpack with phone capable accessories or something.
