An exemplary scholar, whose work provided me with my earliest scholarly introduction to the Classical world while I was still at school. An introduction for which I remain incredibly grateful. A seismic loss.

Devastated to hear that the wonderful Dame Averil Cameron has passed away. She was a groundbreaking scholar of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies, a trailblazer for women in academia, a devout Christian and someone who managed to be both formidable and loveable. A true great.

@edcreedy Yes, it’s quite frustrating. Episcopi vagantes should be avoided. It’s disappointing that so many media outlets are platforming them without question.

@thevicarswife Good point. This ‘episcopal’ proliferation is concerning, & such individuals appear devoid of meaningful accountability & credibility. As a non-conformist I don’t put much stock in any bishop, but the boom in micro-denominations with aggressive online platforms is unhelpful.

@edcreedy He is not a bishop in any meaningful way. Not in any recognised denomination. Its almost like a deed poll title.

Some news: I’ve accepted an offer to begin a post-doc at KU Leuven within the Research Unit of the History of Church and Theology of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies. Our family will move to Belgium at the end of May and I’ll begin this summer. We are excited!

Durham has felt more Mediterranean than North Eastern today. The final throes of Epiphany Term mediated through glorious spring sunshine.

A further reflection. Such theological impoverishment is, perhaps, a product of an evangelical culture (or cultures) focused on evangelism but often lacking the thought-through discipleship that ought to accompany and complement evangelistic endeavours.

Only a snapshot, and methodologically limited to th US alone, but functionally speaking, ancient heresies like Ebionitism and Arianism are alive and flourishing. Evangelicals desperately need both historical retrieval and a theological revival.

Fallen down a slight rabbit hole but astonishing results from the last few @Ligonier State of Theology surveys... From the 2025 SoT: 49% of respondents either somewhat agree or strongly agree that "Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God."

Gotta say, did not have "Greece sends warships to defend island from Persian attacks" on my bingo card for this millennium, yet here we are.

Wonderful news if this proves to be the case. And John is quite right, why not put energy and resources into improving pallative care instead, and giving one another genuine dignity and value in their final days?

It looks as though the Government will stop the ‘Assisted Dying’ Bill in its tracks. I have always opposed it. It was not properly considered and lacked support from the Royal Colleges and organisations representing disabled people. We should improve palliative care instead.

Ah it’s government implosion season, that special time each year where we watch the UK government crumble under a mess of its own making. I was worried we wouldn’t be celebrating this year. Good to see the tradition lives on.

We had this in the Commons stage too. Assisted suicide advocates cite arguments for proper professional assessment of the patient as support for their Bill - but the Bill explicitly DOES NOT include this vital safeguard
Dan Hitchens@ddhitchens

Confirmed—and in the most forceful language I have ever seen the APM use on this subject. “Lord Falconer cited, and misrepresented, expert evidence presented…by the Association for Palliative Medicine.”
