On October 11, Global Hydropower Day, we highlight China's first and the world's largest hydropower station with a double-row unit layout—the SPIC Lijiaxia Hydropower Station. It is not only a green pearl on the Yellow River but also a key power source for the Qinghai-Henan UHV DC project.🤗
Acting as a "super stabilizer" for new energy sources like wind and solar, its total installed capacity of 2,000 MW effectively balances the fluctuations of renewable power generation, converting intermittent energy into stable, high-quality electricity. This represents a major innovation in hydropower engineering and a vivid example of efficiently utilizing clean energy to help achieve "dual carbon" goals.🌿

@JavierBlas I'm not sure where you are getting your data, but the reality somewhat undermines your premise. According to the Red Electrica website it seems that hydro was ~10% of generation at the time of the outage, a bit over 3GW, and there was a large amount of pumped storage too - ~3GW.

Before the outage hit, Spain was running its grid with very little dispatchable spinning generation, and therefore no much inertia.
Solar PV/thermal + wind: ~78%
Nuclear: 11.5%
Co-generation: 5%
Gas-fired: ~3% (less than 1GW)

Global alliance for Pumped Storage launched in Baku. At an inspiring meeting during COP29 Azerbaijan the International Hydropower Association (IHA) brought together governments from all continents and many organizations to showcase pumped storage as the battery of the world. When the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing or at peak energy demand, we need batteries. Pumped storage and man made batteries will fill this void in the renewable energy chain. There are at least hundred thousand suitable sites for pumped storage globally. Dams can be fit beautifully into the terrain as the worlds largest battery (2,1 Giga watt) in Zhejiang, China (showcased in photo). Please join us in Paris in September 2025 for the Global Pumped Storage summit!

Meeting the engineers spearheading the renewable revolution.
It was inspring to meet Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research (CISPDR) Corporation in Wuhan 🇨🇳.
It is a high tech engineering survey, planning, design, scientific research, construction and management company in China and abroad.
It successfully completed planning and design for the Three Gorges hydro plant and the South-to-North Water Diversion project, the two most important hydraulic projects in China.
Now the Institue is deeply involved in developing the battery technology for the next phase of the green revolution. With a delegation from International Hydropower Association (IHA)
we had had a most interesting exhange on pumped storage, compressed air, chemical batteries and hydrogen - the four tecnologies they are exploring for storing energy.
Ancient China produced miracles as the Great Wall and the Grand Canal. The engineers of the Institute are the modern magicians, creating the wonders of the renewable revolution.

Exciting visit to worlds largest renewable battery! ☀️
Changlongshan pumped storage power station in Anji, Zhejiang is the biggest in China 🇨🇳 and the world. I led a delegation from International Hydropower Association (IHA). to see its beauty and efficiency. Its spectacular.
The capacity is 2,1 gigawatt and the plant is tuned in during peak hours when energy demand is high. An integrated system of solar and wind, with pumped storage when wind is not blowing or sun is not shining, is highly effective. Water is pumped up from lower to higher dam when surplus of energy and released at peak energy demand.
This is the future of renewables!
There are huge plans for many more pumped storage facilities in China , India 🇮🇳 and the world. International Hydropower Association will host a big conference in Paris next year.

Political earthquake in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.
The left wing candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected President of Sri Lanka this weekend. This is the first time since independence that the Sri Lankan people elect a party and a candidate from outside the traditional elite. Dissanayaka or AKD as he is affectionately called comes from very humble upbringings in the Anuradhapura district. His party or coalition have never in the past been close to power.
The result is a testimony to the pain underprivileged Sri Lankans have felt during the economic crisis. There is widespread sympathy for AKDs fight against corruption and his call for more welfare for the people.
The weakness of the election winner is that his coalition has very little experience running a complicated state like Sri Lanka. They will also struggle to implement their many promises in a most challenging economic environment. They may struggle to achieve majority in the parliament.
This election is certain to raise eyebrows in many foreign capitals. Diplomats should think twice. AKD has reached out to India, China and the West during his campaign. We should all reciprocate and help him become a successful leader. A more prosperous, peaceful and greener Sri Lanka is in everyone´s interest. AKD deserves help on that journey.
This election was also the first in a long time were chauvinism and ethnic extremism played no role during the campaign.
Many western nations can learn from the peacefulness of the election and the grace the main losing candidates Sajith Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe showed towards the winner.
Ranil Wickremesinghe will go into history as the man who restored normalcy to Sri Lanka in the midst of the all time economic meltdown. Hardly any leader in world history has been reelected on the basis of implementing an IMF program. We will see more to Ranil.

Bravo - Tamil Nadu 🇮🇳 goes all in on hydro!
The government of Tamil Nadu gives in-principle nod to start 12 hydroelectric projects.
Tamil Nadu has a huge potential for both offshore and onshore wind power as well as for solar. But even in Tamil Nadu the wind is not blowing every day and the sun is not always shining, so battery is needed. Using pumped storage as battery, will give a complete, integrated renewable power system.
The stored water can be used during the peak hour, or whenever required, to generate energy through a hydro plant.
Hydropower is sometimes the least talked about part of the renewable energy mix. Its great that Tamil Nadu takes the lead.
The combined generation capacity aims at 14,500 megawatt.

Global Renewables Alliance will change the world! ☀️
With governments, business and civil society we will help the world triple the global renewable energy production. The future belongs to solar, wind, hydro and battery storage.
It was truly inspiring to join the leadership retreat of the CEOs of the renewable community in Lisboa for a strategy discussion.
We touched upon the need for right political regulations, for grids, finances, increased battery and pumped hydro storage, consultations with local stakeholders, allowing windfalls to remain with communities, fighting back against misinformation, the dominant role of China in renewables and a lot more. A lot of hard work is ahead. But I am sure we wil reach the tripling target. 👍
