It's not a pipeline problem. It's a power problem. The WNBA was built on Black women. In 2026, the coaching staff doesn't reflect that. When Noelle Quinn listed every Black woman who had coached before her in 24 years of WNBA history it took 17 seconds and that number has barely grown since. Black women deserve more than a league that celebrates them on the court and overlooks them in the front office.

Does anyone else get the impression Cathy Engelbert does not care whether she keeps her job? Mistakes happen. The problem is that Engelbert rarely seems willing to admit one. She doubles down, pushes the same bad decision harder, then lets the league’s marketing machine turn it into a campaign. That is frustrating when the subject is branding or officiating. It becomes disturbing when player safety is involved. Sports Business Journal reported that Engelbert did not intend to suspend Alyssa Thomas after the blow to Caitlin Clark’s throat and only reversed course after Adam Silver intervened. If it is accurate, it represents a staggering failure of judgment. Then, after reportedly being forced to discipline Thomas, Engelbert immediately shifted the focus to defending her against alleged threats that were never produced publicly or substantiated through law enforcement. Any real threat should be condemned. But Thomas can be protected from abuse and still be held accountable for what happened on the court. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Instead, the league once again blurred the issue, softened the discipline and turned the aggressor into the victim. At some point, this stops looking like ordinary incompetence. It starts looking like a commissioner whose judgment is so clouded by politics, institutional loyalty or personal agenda that she can no longer apply the same standard to everyone. And if Adam Silver really had to step in to force the right decision, then Cathy Engelbert is commissioner in title only.

Over-all Season Avg: 11%, only player in the league to be in double digit and blitzed twice as much as the 2nd highest behind her. 5.) Opposing teams picked her up full-court, guarding her from 94 feet on almost every possession when she operated as the primary point guard (even being guarded 94 feet in the All-Star Game). 6.) Receiving end of 5 Assessed Flagrant Fouls (1 every 9 games) 17% of League Total; include the ones that were no-calls, misses, or diminished to common fouls...closer to 30% of League Total. 7.) Allowed to be pushed, grabbed, scratched, eye-poked, blind-sided, constant landing spot violations, hair-pulled, knocked down, strikes to the head with very few fouls called in her favor. 8.) Single/Double/Triple coverage every single game for the entirety of the games. 9.) Caitlin Clark’s opening schedule in her Rookie season was widely considered unfairly stacked. She and the Indiana Fever played 11 games in the first 20 days of the season—two more than any other WNBA team in that timeframe—which provided almost no practice time for a young, rebuilding roster. 10.) Of those first 11 games, only 2 were teams with records of .500 or worse...MASSIVELY FRONT-LOADED with the top tier teams. The reason why I say UNBREAKABLE & UNTOUCHABLE: We will never see a Rookie accomplish those numbers under those conditions ever again. The fact that there are phenoms playing under an umbrella of freedom of movement with a FRACTION of the defensive pressure and receiving only 1 to zero Flagrants and a MUCH FRIENDLIER SCHEDULE than what Clark faced her rookie year, and STILL CAN'T BREAK HER RECORDS?? SPEAKS VOLUMES why they are truly amazing achievements for her that will never be repeated again.
