“Dramatic changes are going to be controversial even if they create improvement, because those changes often require disrupting existing power structures, existing networks of privilege,” said @Parker_Baxter @CUDenverSPA.

I have a new opinion piece at the The 74 Million about what struggling school systems can learn from the transformation of public education in Denver, Colorado. Transformative change does not come easily, but dramatic improvement is possible.

""We needed to reinvent systems that had long mirrored and perpetuated inequities in society. This called for a set of pervasive, difficult and sustained changes. Each change mattered, but each mattered more as one of a series in a connected whole."
David Osborne@OsborneDavid

If you want to learn from a school district that improved faster than almost any other after 2007, read this by two of its architects, US Sen. Michael Bennet, former superintendent of Denver Public Schools, & Tom Boasberg, who succeeded him. #edreform publicaffairs.ucdenver.edu/docs/libraries…

"You make the decision to close their schools and tell them it's for their good, telling them they're not doing well on tests. These are kids who are poor," Falcon said, tearing up. "Their parents don't know." cbsnews.com/colorado/news/… #edpolicy #edcolo

Why do self-proclaimed defenders of public education have such low expectations for low-income students? "Test scores are correlated with income and the education level of your parents" Retired #Denver Teacher & "Public Ed Defender" Jaquelyn Falcon youtube.com/watch?v=cM8rWm…

It is one thing to argue that school systems w. large numbers of low-income & students of color cannot improve when there is not strong evidence to the contrary. It is something else entirely to continue to claim this is impossible in the face of overwhelming evidence of success.

“We probably are not going to be able to mandate our way to integration and we definitely shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking that Black and Brown students need white students in their classrooms in order to achieve,” said @Parker_Baxter. Learn more: edsystemsleadership.org
Michael Bennet@SenatorBennet

70 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court made clear that 'the right to a public education' must be made available to all on equal terms in Brown v. Board of Education. Over three decades later, segregation is increasing in Colorado and nationwide. cpr.org/2024/05/17/70-…

@dropoutnation We live in hope and have much work to do. Perhaps if we can stop worshipping and defending what we have already built, we can focus better on building what we urgently need.
