"The claim here is that we should do unpleasant and unnecessary things to children now in order to prepare them for the fact that just such things will be done to them later.  This justification ... continues to drive education policy." alfiekohn.org/article/case-g…

“…American society tends to equate inactivity with immorality, and productivity with worth. Faced with a condition that simply doesn’t allow people to move—even one whose deficits can be measured and explained—many doctors and loved ones default to disbelief.”

🛑I wrote about what “fatigue” really means for people with long COVID and ME/CFS, and why this profoundly debilitating symptom is so often misunderstood and trivialized. (This piece also covers PEM.) 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archive…

spent months reporting on families across America who have lost children to drowning. What I found is that in America, swimming is a luxury rather than a public good. nytimes.com/2023/07/27/opi…

At New Mexico's biggest jail for children, kids from 12-17 are "routinely subjected to strip searches, held for weeks in cells without toilets, and left with only a thin plastic sheet to block out the glare of hallway lights that never turn off" searchlightnm.org/at-new-mexicos…

It's such an uphill battle when pushing for equitable systems! Putting barriers in place to recording extenuating circs or accessing extensions creates a non-compassionate systems...for what? Barriers do not uphold academic standards, they just reproduce inequitable experiences.

If comments to this post are an indicator of how many clinicians view accommodating disabled colleagues… how could they *possibly* conceptualize or reimagine truly enabling & empowering their disabled patients? THIS is why inclusion matters. #DisabilityJustice h/t @jbullockruns

One week ago, a court in California ruled that employers cannot be sued for spreading COVID to their workers due to lack of protections. This week, In-N-Out banned their employees from wearing masks. This is horrible.

Farm workers put food on our tables, yet 85 years after the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law, many are still paid at or below the federal poverty line. I introduced the Fairness for Farm Workers Act to ensure overtime pay and protections for these essential workers.

So politicians are proud of starving children to teach parents responsibility because this is a part of how the Empire has always operated. Children were put into institutions, transported, forcibly migrated, imprisoned in residential schools, to teach us all how to be British.

This is from the site OSHA linked, under “standards” (the binding rules for employers). Note the word “was” here. If an issue already happened they can vaguely try to fine someone. Specific binding heat standards would make employers do specific things to PREVENT workers dying

Hi @JortsTheCat! Employers are required to provide workers a safe and healthy workplace. That includes protection from excessive heat and heat-related illnesses. Workers have rights. Learn more 👇 osha.gov/heat-exposure

@heymrsbond I should note that we are a strong union state, and it has to be a very bad evaluation to have any impact.

@heymrsbond In my state, teachers in their first three years are evaluated "comprehensively" on all eight state criteria, but "focus" on one criterion a year after that, going back to comprehensive every five years.
