In a closeout to #BlackHistoryMonth, Senator @drakilahweber published this important piece about why she authored SB 1067 - legislation that will require screening for math difficulties in K-2 classrooms and evidence-based interventions for those in need. The bill will first be heard by the Senate Education Committee in March or April. We urge the members to read the words of their colleague: capitolweekly.net/supporting-the… cc: @senatorsrp @SenOchoaBogh @senatorcabaldon @SenatorChoi @SenDaveCortese @senatorgonzalez @SenEloiseReyes

This new effort is @drakilahweber bill, SB 1067, proudly sponsored by EdVoice. We successfully helped pass landmark literacy legislation to uplift reading outcomes for our students. With just 37% proficiency in K-12, it's time to do the same for math. LEARN MORE: edvoice.org/earlymath

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., an admirable champion for civil rights, racial justice, and equitable access to opportunity. Rev. Jackson understood that public education is foundational to democracy and that respecting and investing in teachers is inseparable from advancing justice. He spent his life fighting to ensure Black communities and historically underserved students had access to quality education, opportunity, and power. At EdVoice, we carry that vision forward in California by working to reshape public education so that ALL students have futures filled with opportunity. We celebrate his life and will continue learning from his lessons and teachings this #BlackHistoryMonth and beyond.

📣It’s official! Snator @drakilahweber has introduced Senate Bill 1067 in the CA Legislature. SB 1067 builds on the universal screening for reading difficulties bill that EdVoice helped pass in 2023. If enacted, the bill would: ➡️Require all K-2 public school students to be screened for early math difficulties ➡️Ensure that students needing additional support receive timely, evidence-based interventions 📉The state ranks 43rd nationally in fourth-grade math proficiency, and just 26% of California’s K-12 low-income students are meeting grade-level math standards. Math proficiency is essential for long-term success in school, career, and life. Addressing early math difficulties is a critical step toward expanding access to opportunity for more students. LET'S PASS THIS BILL! The #CaliforniaStudentAidCommission has released its first report evaluating the effectiveness of the #GoldenStateTeacherGrant program and the results are overwhelmingly positive👏 Unfortunately, the @CAgovernor proposed state budget doesn't include new funding for the program, despite its impact on high-needs schools and students. The evidence is clear. GSTG is an effective solution to the #TeacherShortage and needs consistent, ongoing funding to continue producing positive results for teachers, students, and communities! #CAStateBudget #CaliforniaTeachersMatter #InvestInTeachers #TeacherShortageSolutions #Prop98 #TeacherRetention

While $250M in @CAgovernor proposed state budget for the Teacher Residency Grant Program is a positive step to help solve the state's teacher shortage, a greater investment must be made. Teachers are the single most important school-based factor of student success. Programs like the #GoldenStateTeacherGrant have demonstrated real impact in our high-needs schools, but did not receive new funding in the budget. Our hope is that the Governor and Legislature will further prioritize a strong teacher workforce in the May Revise. EdVoice is encouraged to see @CAgovernor historical TK-12 investment of $149.1B in the proposed 2026-27 state budget. Still, more must be done to uplift outcomes for our students, teachers, and school communities. We urge the Governor and Legislature to provide additional investments in early math, as California currently ranks 43rd nationally in fourth-grade math proficiency. Additionally, we hope to see new funding for the @castudentaid Golden State Teacher Grant Program, a financial incentive program that has successfully placed tens of thousands of qualified educators in high-needs schools benefitting hundreds of thousands of students. For too long, our education system has been mired in overlapping officials and an unclear chain of command. I'm proposing we unify the State Board with the Department of Education and empower the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

EdVoice strongly supports @CAgovernor proposal to modernize the governance of California's public education system. His plan will create greater accountability and improve coordination across the state. When the state functions better, districts function better and student success accelerates. @CADeptEd @CA_Supt @SBECalifornia
