On July 18, 1937, Hunter S. Thompson was born. He lived with the Hells Angels, terrified Jack Nicholson with one of Hollywood's strangest birthday pranks, inspired Johnny Depp to move in while preparing for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and changed journalism forever. Hunter S. Thompson didn't just write about extraordinary people—he became one himself. In 1965, Thompson spent nearly a year living alongside the Hells Angels motorcycle club while researching what would become his breakout book, Hell's Angels. Rather than reporting from a distance, he immersed himself in their world. The experiment ended violently when members of the gang severely beat him after disagreements over his portrayal of them and the success of the book. His reputation for outrageous behavior only grew. One year, he decided to surprise his friend Jack Nicholson for his birthday by launching a military-style parachute flare over Nicholson's home, blasting recordings of squealing pigs through loudspeakers, firing a pistol into the air, and leaving an elk heart on the actor's doorstep. Nicholson, who happened to be dealing with a real stalker at the time, never came outside. Years later, after Thompson's death, he honored the bizarre prank with the handwritten words, "How'd ya like the Elk Heart?" on a painting dedicated to his friend. By the late 1990s, Thompson had become such a legendary figure that Johnny Depp moved into his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, while preparing to portray him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The friendship lasted until Thompson's death in 2005, when Depp financed an unforgettable farewell that launched Thompson's ashes from a 153-foot tower topped with his iconic Gonzo fist. Beyond the unforgettable stories, Thompson left a lasting mark on American journalism by pioneering Gonzo journalism—a style that abandoned traditional objectivity and placed the writer directly inside the story. His influence can still be seen today in immersive reporting, memoirs, documentaries, and long-form journalism. As if all that weren't enough, Hunter S. Thompson also ran for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, on his "Freak Power" ticket—and nearly won. It's hard to imagine anyone else living quite the life he did. Happy Birthday, Hunter.

This is Jennifer Castro, a Brazilian woman who went viral in a video back in 2024 for not giving up her seat to a child on a GOL Airlines flight. Castro had boarded the plane and when she got to her window seat she noticed a child sitting in her seat that she specifically paid for. Castro, a bank employee, refused to give up her pre-paid window seat to a toddler (whose mother was not in that row), leading to a confrontation. Another passenger (reportedly lawyer Eluciana Cardoso) filmed her without consent, and the video spread widely online, sparking backlash, harassment, reputational damage, and she claimed, the loss of her job. She has since filed lawsuits against GOL Airlines stating the airline failed its’ duty of care to protect a paying customer's basic rights and safety during the boarding dispute and against the passenger who filmed her for invasion of privacy and emotional distress. Her legal counsel argues that the recording passenger violated privacy laws by distributing her image maliciously. If you want a window seat, purchase a window seat. I wouldn’t give up my seat either. Don’t just take it for granted that someone is just going to give you their seat because you have a child. Not sure why she would be the one to be publicly harassed. 🤯 I’m with Jennifer Castro on this. 💯 Do you think she was the villain in this case or do you think she had every right to her seat and to say no to giving the child her seat? @DOGEQEEN @thetoyman1 Vote no. It’s a natural disaster after they over suppressed fires for decades. Many of the fires are in the wilderness where it isn’t practical to fight them.
