These Turkoman women in their traditional wedding costumes were photographed in 1883 within the Yomud confederation of tribes in Krasnovodsk. The towering headdresses, covered in rows of silver coins, were part of their dowry and were considered their personal property. Beyond the coins, these costumes often included red carnelian stones, which were believed to protect the wearer's health and provide a spiritual shield against misfortune. A bride’s complete ensemble could weigh up to 17 kilograms, meaning that on her wedding day she quite literally carried the weight of her family’s status and her own future financial independence. This specific image is part of the photograph collection by Alexander Roinashvili. #drthehistories
