@EddieComeaux @UCLALawReview @DrUJayakumar As a Latino person in higher education, I feel it is super important to learn about the inclusion of POC in such prestigious institutions. The status that these students identify other in 1) wealthy or 2) "privileged to attend".

@mernakamel958 @KatryaLy Hi Merna! Your insight on students of color is one that many can explain they felt in and out of college. Students who tend to have the best training, tend to be wealthier. I feel this is also a class issue as well as an issue embedded in racism! #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

The UC system shows great favoritism towards white student athletes through their admission process. This causes a great disadvantage to students of color and creates an impossible environment that hinders them from reaching their full potential! @KatryaLy #UCR50

Racial Inequality in sports has always been a constant threat to the pursuit of happiness in America's Freedom. This is no different in the world of intercollegiate athletics, as draft picks show a heavy disadvantage to black and brown students. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

In Chapter 26, the dilemma of academic care for athletes is one that is highly debated from the NCAA, American teachers, and even standardized test makers. A current issue in today's academia is the fact that preforming well in standardized testing is needed #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

@mernakamel958 @KatryaLy Hi Merna! I agree that the restriction of a persons social media is too far for a school to have control over. I think of it as a limit of personal opinion as some students fear being kicked off of a team they so desperately fought to be on #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

Social media constraints placed on college athletes have gone too far. Ch 24 highlights that college athletes' social media accounts are under constant security. What student-athletes post on Social media has the power to determine if they can stay on the team! @KatryaLy #UCR50

The recruiting process of college athletics is one that is almost entirely its own job. Stated in part six of the book, It is said that his process takes a hand full of coaches, admin-- and money-- to convince a student to take the leap to join the team. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

@KatryaLy African American male athletes are exploited, based on the fact the their labor generates enormous revenues for athletic departments while they go unpaid(McCormick & McCormick, 2010).

Female coaches, for the most part, coach female teams. This is a topic of concern for women, as they tend to only have authority over other women. This causes a warped perception to figures in sport administration. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

@zjin046 @KatryaLy what you said about mental illness on POC athletes is a very valid and real statement. When diversity is not show, many students can have imposter syndrome or thoughts of not belonging that lack of representation brings #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu

Racial interaction is important for college athletic students. Increasing the number of students of color can build interracial friendships, and positively impact student outcomes. Racial discrimination will negatively affect the mental health of people of color @KatryaLy #UCR50

Diversity on intercollegiate teams in college positively effect the environment of the school and spirit of the team. There is a connection between how students are able to preform when representation is on the court. @abhornUCRedu #UCR50

@Mariaplasmerc @abhornUCRedu Hi Maria! I agree that student athletes tend to have a strained relationship with their body. I think that in high school, a lot of kids I was on the swim team with constantly worried about their appearance given the revealing suits. This puts a person's worth into their looks.

Ego-identities are prevalent— posing a risk to the health of student athletes. It is evident that they become more likely to abuse drugs & develop eating disorders in an attempt to increase their performance & keep their scholarships @abhornUCRedu #ucr50

In Chapter 21, we read about "The Case of Johnathan Benjamin" and his rights as a student athlete. Johnathan was the type of student- athlete any college would want. He soon decided to start his own clothing brand, but the NCAA does not like when a student profits from success.

@mernakamel958 @KatryaLy Hi Merna! I agree that college athletics can feel burnt out. Threw personal experience, I have friends who attend D1 universities who had the "free ride" conundrum. Most of them realize that it has shown to be extremely worked for in the long run. #UCR50 @abhornUCRedu12

Are colleges expecting too much of college athletes? According to Ch. 6 of Comeaux’s book, college athletes practice more than 40 hours per week while they are still expected to register as full-time students. College athletes are feeling extreme burnout! #UCR50 @KatryaLy

In Chapter 11 of the textbook, the authors discover the "business model" that is college athletics. In the section "About the Money", the authors explore how colleges poor money into their athletics programs, but makes close to no profit. @abhornUCRedu #UCR50

@mernakamel958 @KatryaLy Hi Merna! I really enjoyed the question you post at the end. It really shows the impact of how in a place meant for higher education, brute and strength is more valued. I agree getting paid 10x more is indeed a huge margin. @abhornUCRedu #UCR50

It is outrageous that a coach's salary exceeds the salary of University and College professors and academic personnel. Ch. 12 of Comeaux's book states that football coaches are averaging $1 million per year Vs. $95,199 for tenured professors. Do they deserve it? #UCR50 @KatryaLy
