Edward is actually looking out for Will by trying to not set him up to be a failure or a subject that people use to test on and just use. Edward knows the struggles of climbing the tower and how hard and dangerous that will be for someone unable to use Magic like Will. He is actually showing him a kindness, just in his own form.
