@BrockMcGregor @DarrinCanniff Very true, it’ll be too late in the season… but worth voting against? Better late than never.
Hopefully council will learn from past mistakes when this comes around again, trying to save a buck at the cost of rural road safety. Shameful.
English

@ejprelaz @DarrinCanniff Did you watch the meeting? I said I'd be in support had we brought this in January, the RFP and application will be too late in the season. I've also supported a 20 million dollar increase in gravel conversion...and an increase in rural infrastructure spending every year
English

Shame on Councillors @BrockMcGregor Conor Allin and Mayor @DarrinCanniff for voting against this motion. Their lack of care for rural infrastructure needs and safety of rural roads in CK couldn’t be more obvious. A necessity in rural CK that makes up approx 0.8% of the tax rate.

Mark Carney didn’t cancel the carbon tax. He set the rate at zero. It matters because he can increase it anytime he wants, without a vote, should he win.
It also matters because he’s spent the last decade evangelizing about the importance of a carbon price for the world. He’s never said it’s bad public policy. He’s said it’s bad politics right now.
He hasn’t said he will repeal the legislation should he win.
He hasn’t even said he won’t raise the rates.
Read his book.
He’s told us what his plans are. I can’t believe how few people are holding him to account for this.

@CatMatton @carmenmcgregor Not the singular lowest but yes, one of… should see the state that rural CK is left in compared to neighbouring counties and municipalities!
English

@ejprelaz @carmenmcgregor Doesn’t CK have the lowest tax rate on farm land than any other municipality in Ontario?
English

Can any of the urban councillors tell me what additional services and maintenance they’re going to add to rural CK when they vote yes to increase the farm tax rate? Other than creating more tax review for CK what good is this going to do for your residence? @carmenmcgregor

Chatham-Kent Council is set to get a report back on possible changes to the farm tax ratio in the municipality. #ckont cknewstoday.ca/chatham/news/2…
English

@BrockMcGregor @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK Yes Brock, I have the tax bill that shows the difference. Interested to see what “strategies” the report shows other than what you mentioned. Otherwise sounds like you and I could have tweeted what to do and saved some money.
English

@ejprelaz @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK The request was for a report on identifying strategies to dedicate the associated change to rural infrastructure. Would have to wait for the report to see how that's defined (gravel roads, bridges?) Also important to note rural residents pay residential ratio on their residence
English

@BrockMcGregor @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK Yes I understand the article and the vote. Question remains, what services and maintenance will be added if the farm tax ratio is increased? Especially from 22% to 25%. What justifies a 3% increase? What are we asking to be reallocated? What’s specific in this report request?
English

@ejprelaz @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK So no ratio change has occurred, a report comes back in the fall with info (and we actually have to approve the ratios once a year anyway)
English

@BrockMcGregor @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK Sorry Brock, you’re talking about reallocating percentages so yes it is “revenue neutral” if the farm tax ratio goes up and let’s say residential or commercial goes down. Still doesn’t answer the question of what additional services and maintenance are added for that sector.
English

@ejprelaz @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK Just as an aside, outside of any discussion on tax ratios (which are revenue neutral, so it's not adding overall budget dollars) building permits pay for the building department, it's legislated that way in ON, so it's a self funding service, it doesn't add general revenue
English

@BrockMcGregor @RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK How is increasing the tax ratio revenue neutral and not add additional revenue to the budget?
If a building is added to an existing property and that property is reassessed to reflect an increase in value does that not create an increase in taxes due?
English

@RSHFarms @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK @BrockMcGregor I have no idea why they can’t figure out building permits. They make more revenue with the property value increases. And even when we receive drainage ditch maintenance we pay for it in special charges on our tax bill… so the question, what’s the benefit? More money for Chatham
English

@ejprelaz @DarrinCanniff @AmyFinnCK @BrockMcGregor Maybe make it easier for agriculture buildings to be built on existing farmsteads? or perhaps proper drainage maintenance? Who are we kidding we're all in this to better the city of Chatham, I vote for de-amalgamation.
