"It’s often far easier and more comfortable for us to avoid looking inside ourselves." That's from @ekasriel's new book, "Deep Listening: Transform your Relationship with Family, Friends and Foes." As she writes, "Once you feel courageous enough to explore your inner landscape, the impact on your most significant conversations can be profound." You can read an excerpt here: community.thriveglobal.com/the-power-of-d…

Insightful discussion at @theRSAorg between @profpauldolan @ekasriel @Livingstone_S around 'Listening and disagreeing productively'. ⭐Performative listening, where we're just "pre-loading the gun, ready to fire" ⭐The importance of forcing yourself to talk to people who don't agree with you and how we can deliberately design environments which enable listening ⭐The opportunity for humour, art, music and sport to create common ground where people can listen to each other, even if they don't change their minds ⭐ Beliefism and how one tiny sliver of information about someone makes you decide that they are wholly good, or wholly bad (in which case you discount absolutely everything they say) The best question came from someone asking how we could redesign the House of Commons so it's not two sides shouting at each other - but where's the fun in that...🙂
