“ We have temporarily removed this briefing while it undergoes an internal review..’’ What! Eh! Hang on! Amnesty’s reputation is collapsing and they are “reviewing” a public statement…. I have never seen such chaos-in-comms….

Translation: oops, didn’t realise people outside our ideological bubble are THIS pissed off about the loss of sex-based rights. We remain implacably opposed to any organisation fighting to retain them, but shove in the words ‘rights of women’ to keep the bigots happy.

@TheWordWell That's ok - they're going to try again when it's their new financial year, so all is not lost, or snaffled 😊

Very much enjoying hearing the word 'trousered' a lot at the moment, as in "He trousered £5m..." Also a client told me today we don't have the green light on a project after all because the budget's been snaffled. Another good word!

@sookio @dieworkwear I stubbornly call it Twitter regardless, in solidarity with the hardcore Twitter crowd. At some point they'll admit that X was a bad idea and we can then call it Twitter, initially known as Twitter and then dark times as X, before it reverted back. A substantial appetiser.

Ely Markets is a brilliant example of a business incubator that does just that; we have so many examples of businesses that started with just a stall then went on to bricks and mortar, all part of Ely's thriving independent retail scene. Getting that first, small foothold is so important

If we are to rebuild our High Streets, we need to start from the bottom up. Protect our smaller independents, give them the support thats needed. In turn, get younger people back into jobs. The jobs that were lost by increasing National Insurance.

Really interesting on the Burnham comms strategy and the fresh approach, which is welcome. I do think he needs to come up against a Beth Rigby or to get a grilling on Today and other serious news programmes, so he can set out his policies and face some sort of scrutiny before just...taking power theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

1) It’s *literally* your job to regulate this platform. 2) If you can’t, what does that mean? Tell us. 3) The Dept of Culture is not ‘your’ department, it’s ours. You’re its temporary custodian 5) But Facebook is ok? Really?
Lisa Nandy MP@lisanandy

I've decided to leave this platform and my Department will too. A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate. It isn't healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it.

If true that @andyburnham not taking media questions after speech today then good move. Speeches matter and when important should speak for themselves. A problem with Keir S communications was that he would make a speech, then take Qs and the broadcast journalists in particular would make it more about them and their “take” than him. If and when he becomes PM Burnham will be answerable to Parliament, not the showbiz style media coverage of politics. The blah factory will go into overdrive today with journalists interviewing each other about how they ought to be allowed to ask Qs. The speech itself is more important than anything they say before during or after. Setting the agenda vital from the off.

@Callum96__ @campbellclaret Haha, you're right of course - I still think he's up to the job, and he needs to fend off accusations of just riding into town and taking the top job without any scrutiny

@sookio @campbellclaret I think that would be totally fine if the focus were on scrutinising policy. Instead, it’ll be: “Should there be a g election?”, “A senior Labour source said…”, “X from X said this about Miliband”, and an unhinged question from the Sun / GB News on some random r wing conspiracy

Don't know who came up with National Theatre Live, but the fact that you can see the best performances from the finest acting talent...local to you and for just the cost of a cinema ticket... is just brilliant, isn't it. I've seen loads of things I never would have made a special trip to see otherwise

Happy that the For You algorithm is serving me up PJ Harvey and clips from The Cure's recent live gigs, rather than wall-to-wall arguments and people reliving various airline-seating traumas

@angiefuz @hoffman_noa Why would you employ women if you knew you'd have to give them 7 weeks' extra paid leave a year - it's so obviously unworkable

@sookio @hoffman_noa As I said- crazy! We’ve spent all our careers trying to get actual equality in the workplace and this just doesn’t help! Even all the female bosses I’ve worked for would bin this idea! Compassion for any debilitating health issue yes, but not this!

EXCL: The Green Party is considering giving ‘all workers who menstruate’ an additional 36 days’ paid leave a year, The Spectator can reveal. Under the proposals, businesses would be forced to allow staff to take three days off every month during menstruation. Employees would not have to present a doctor’s note, and the time off would not be recorded as sickness absence or deducted from annual leave. The plan is laid out in a motion for Green Party Conference. The motion - which specifically refers to ‘workers who menstruate’ rather than ‘women’ - has been submitted by a male party member. It could become official party policy in October this year.
