@JustSteveKing Ask in your local communitys Facebook group, there's usually a bunch it-people with a garage full of spares and leftovers. Or so I've heard... 😬

I'm trying to get my hands on some old, even broken computers/laptops for my boy this Christmas. He loves trying to fix things, and loves taking them apart even more. Anyone know anywhere I can buy this sort of stuff? I don't want to waste money buying new for him to destroy!

To the dads with young, young kids, here's my one piece of advice. Become a morning person, and fit all of your hobbies into the hour or so before everyone else in your house wakes up. Read, hike, play a video game, whatever you like. But at 6am. :/ You'll get used to it haha.

@jwage Have you tried using an external service just to see if it makes a difference? Check sauce labs for example.

Why are Selenium and Panther browser tests so slow? I want to use them more instead of Kernel Browser tests but they are painfully slow. The time it takes to execute one request is way slower than when I do it in the browser manually.

If you're a Podscan user, I'd love for you to find a few of our emails and mark them as "not spam" if you have a minute. And if you're not, I'd love to know what can be done to increase reputation, with compliance looking like this already

A month ago, a misconfigured backend process sent out thousands of emails a day for a few days. Got a few spam reports. Google still occasionally routes my emails right into spam, and defines links as dangerous. The behemoth is slow to forget 🤣

@Shpigford We ended up on @saucelabs after checking out a lot of the alternatives, what was important for us was to be able to run 5 parallell automated tests without an catastrophic bill. That made a big difference timewise for acceptancetests, checking 5 browsers simultaneously. And live.

What's your go-to toolset for debugging weird browser issues on devices you don't immediately have access to? i.e. I need to debug an issue on Chrome in Windows 11 but don't have a Windows machine.

Quick update: After yesterday's hacked-together positive proof-of-concept I'm now on to actually making a usable app. 🙂 Have created public GitHub and Sentry apps so you can install them and then set up projects without any manual set up. Super happy w/ the UX of that.

I’ve been using PHP since 1998 or 1999. Over half my life! Pretty sure I started on version 3 🤯 My first PHP website as a kid looked something like this: <?php include 'header.php'; ?> Hello World <?php include 'footer.php'; ?>

Just registered selfhosthq . com I'm thinking of turning this into an open-source wiki for self-hosting software. It would be very useful to have guides and best practices for hosting things like Postgres, Redis, Node, etc.

My plan with all this PHP Docker stuff: 1. Get PHP to run as a single user in Docker 2. Show people can sell their apps as self-hosted I'm completely bullish on the idea of customers wanting to self-host. If Ruby can do it, I'm determined to show Laravel can do it too 💪

@mnorgaard @jtke @gwenshap Likely because he was the last tech person to leave, with the code still running somewhere. And he knows someone someday have to be recruited to fix a bug, and hopes that someone read this and get a head start in the debugging. 😁

Everyone is sharing their stored procedures story. Here is mine: 15 years back, I consulted for a private financial institute that packaged and sold ETFs. ETFs are priced daily, and also have daily profit/loss reports with taxes for all the investors. This daily report, which has per regulations has to be both timely and accurate, was written entirely in PL/SQL. Including, memorably, the German tax-code calculations. Millions lines of code. I was there for a major version upgrade in the database. Specifically to resolve all performance regressions that were seen with the new version. Any changes to the logic in order to improve performance were extremely sensitive. And let me tell you, the developer experience left a lot to be desired. Both in terms of language and the tooling. So, stored procedures can be awesome. But I suggest stopping slightly short of implementing the German tax code that way.
