Thought I had a good sabbatical plan for the spring, but it's been upended by a one-time opportunity: I've ended up on the committee creating India's new national 11th and 12th grade curriculum/textbook in computer science. So much for the best laid schemes, but also exciting!

@neeldhara Are there aspects of being a faculty member that you did not foresee when you joined, but which have had a significant impact on what your academic life is like?

Clocked ten years at IITGN today :) Thinking of writing a retrospective of sorts, if you have any ideas for what you might find useful in such a reflection, let me know!

On Teacher's day, I usually recall a teacher who has had an impact on me. Today I want to remember my father. Recently, I was interacting with someone who was struggling to multiply some simple numbers, and immediately went to "I am bad at maths."

@neeldhara I tried only one course on NPTEL: the Algorithms and Data Structures course by Prof. Naveen Garg. It's a great course. That was my first exposure to Algorithms. Fun fact: I was honored to have Prof. Naveen Garg on my masters thesis committee!

Based on some of the responses to my NPTEL remark — thinking of curating some of my favorite courses from the platform. What are some of yours?

@JSTOR It took me a lot of time to access a paper on in-flight WiFi. I found that my browser had made 256 requests and transferred 8.5 MB even before I crossed the paywall (i.e., only the first page was visible). Why this inefficiency? What's going on in my browser?

@CNNnews18 Can I get a link to the original study? I want to know whether the study only shows correlation or also shows causation.

#Meditation | Mind-blowing research suggests meditation might actually reverse brain aging! A new study found long-term meditators had brains that appeared 6-10 years younger than their actual age. #WATCH more with Dr. Balachundhar Subramaniam, (@balachundhar ) Senior Author and @toyasingh @Sonal_MK

@NeelNanda5 It worked better than I expected. Fruits started tasting sweeter, and I no longer had to 'fight' cravings. I guess cutting it out cold turkey, or gradually reducing the 'frequency' instead of the 'concentration' wouldn't have given the same results. (4/4)

@NeelNanda5 The change was so gradual that I didn't notice much of a difference in taste, but my tongue slowly adapted its benchmark of what 'sweet' means. Now I can get the same sweetness with almost no added sugar. (3/n)

A recent dilemma: how to eat less sweet food but still have it in moderation? My solution: Have it with prob 2/3. Abiding by the RNG is far easier than resisting temptation! This is surprisingly general! Probabilistic dieting? Vegetarianism? Half the moral benefits, far easier

@neeldhara @make_hq Yeah, I was wondering why make was listed with these other seemingly unrelated tools 😅 I haven't used xelatex or context or typst.

@ekujupr I meant @make_hq, but I realize now that makefiles absolutely qualify in this context too! Do you use either context or xelatex? Also curious if you have given typst a spin :)

This web application works using a clever application of transitive closure. This saves us the trouble of considering all 21-choose-2 pairs of notions for each fair division setting manually. It was still a lot of work, though: 50 pages and ~80 theorems! (3/3)

Our new paper (arxiv.org/abs/2502.02815) is the most comprehensive study of relations among fair division concepts. In these pictures, there is a path from F1 to F2 *iff* every F1-fair allocation is also F2-fair. (1/3)

It's great that these tools have been curated into a course, because their utility is often not apparent to the uninitiated. Somewhat surprisingly, even as a theoretical computer scientist, I find myself using these tools regularly!
