In just a few minutes, I’m about to take the longest flight in the world and embark on a 24 hour journey to leave my home of Singapore for the US, my home of 3+ years. On one hand, I’m sad - sad to leave my family and friends whom I’ve known for the longest time. Sad to know that I will be missing milestones like birthdays and my nephew going to first grade. Sad to know that I have a limited amount of time left with my parents who are both in their 70s. Sad to know that at best I will only get to return home once a year because it takes over 24 hours and over a thousand dollars to get there. On the other, I can’t wait to get back to my life partner, my dog, and my career - this is a dream I’ve been chasing my entire adulthood. To be working in a job that I love, to have the opportunity to shape the future of the world we live in, and to do so with the loving support and understanding of someone I hope to spend the rest of my life with. Perhaps it is no secret that I speak with different accents and not only converse, but also behave differently whether I’m in Singapore or in the US. And to be honest, I struggle to figure out which is my “real” accent and which is the one I put on. If I have to be so self conscious about how I behave in both countries, do I truly belong in either? They say, home is wherever I’m with you. I don’t disagree, but what happens when one takes the you in question out of the equation in the exercise of understanding one’s individual identity? What exactly is home and what exactly does it mean?

Here's the FULL painting of "Wasted On The Young", which will be in Drop 10 on March 23, 2024. I am proud of it. My heart is in it.👇 This painting has between 20-30 layers of oil paint, applied with a plexiglass tool (often referred to as a squeegee). This technique was pioneered by master painter Gerhard Richter. I learned it from his German contemporary, whom I worked under as an apprentice for over a year. Most of this time, I mixed paint, I swept the floor, I watched, and I listened. For the last two years, while working on Scales, I have done my best to push the limits of this technique, to make it my own. Where my predecessors were heavy-handed, I have a more yin approach. My touch is unbelievably delicate, even when I'm working with a squeegee thats six feet long and loaded with a pint of wet, slick oil paint. I have become so sensitive over the years almost as if I can feel every grain of pigment sliding under the tool. What I feel when I'm painting is the desire to nurture the painting: to give it what it needs. To be a facilitator. Rather than forcing the paint to do what I want, I try to see what will emerge organically. I want nature to move through me, to use me as a tool. Alas, this is difficult. Any tension I feel in my body ends up on the canvas. Racing thoughts transform seamless gradients into chaotic mudslicks. Stuck emotions show up as colorful bruises. Phantom images emerge. The light becomes heavy, the ethereal becomes human. And inevitably, I show up in the work, even when I want to remain hidden. Sometimes this makes for a better painting. And, sometimes it's an utter mess. And so I hang the dripping work on the wall to dry, until I am ready to revisit it again, to add more to its history, to complete the story This is my art. gm ❤️putting the finishing touches on a painting that I've been working on for two months. i saw the painting in a meditation. i knew i had to make it. i just didn't know how. but i figured it out. the result: a process entirely my own: a marriage of meticulous execution and absolute chaos here is one of the last steps, involving the use of a hypodermic needle & archival glue. i will share the final work soon. i have never been more proud

Was about to throw away a painting I disliked and decided to carve into it w/ my wood carving tools instead. The little round stone looking things are actually craters exposing the layers of paint beneath the surface. Weird. So satisfying I'm supposed to be cleaning 😅
