The denunciations of the SSPX consecrations are out of all proportion. They immediately affect the membership - barely a couple of thousand people, including tertiaries. Those who go to SSPX Masses add up to perhaps a million, a lot of people but a tiny proportion of Catholics. Numerically it's hardly a blip. The significance, therefore is not numerical; it is important as a matter of principle. But here I still don't understand the amount of ink spilled in sometimes hysterical articles by commentators, especially those who consider themselves to be orthodox. Surely for every word said about the consecrations, there should be a ream written about the Germans, the Chinese, Study Group 9, Rupnik and other cover-ups, and dodgy ecclesiastical appointments? These are much, much bigger issues for faithful Catholics than the consecration of SSPX bishops. ..... unless of course, there is a subconscious recognition that here lies the real battle for the Truth.....

The SSPX won't be excommunicated; the six Bishops will be. Neither the priests nor the laity who support their efforts will be excommunicated. In other words, it will be for the laity just like it has been for 50 years; their sacraments are valid and their liturgies satisfy your obligation.

The FSSPX prides itself on having more than 700 priests and nearly half a million faithful. Impressive numbers, but numbers that reveal the very problem.
A structure of such magnitude, with valid orders, the traditional Mass, seminaries, and schools, yet without any concrete proposal to resolve the crisis it has itself diagnosed for decades.
Because the FSSPX has reduced Tradition to a merely liturgical and sacramental question. Tradition is preserved. The orders are valid. And for them, that is enough.
But the Catholic faith has never been reducible to valid orders alone. It requires unity of faith, worship, and government under a visible head. Without this, what we have is not the Catholic Church, but a structure of preservation corrupted by the heresy of Gallicanism.
Archbishop Lefebvre saw the crisis clearly, but stopped short of its logical conclusion. The FSSPX not only inherited his hesitation, it refused to move beyond it. And there is something grave in this: it is not a lack of intelligence. The problem lies elsewhere. The intellect has been obscured by a form of idolatry and heresy, namely the refusal to admit a man’s error when that error contradicts the very doctrine they claim to defend.
They insist on remaining in Archbishop Lefebvre’s hesitation as though it were part of the deposit of faith. That is not fidelity to the founder. It is placing the founder above the truth.
More than 700 priests. Half a million faithful. And no answer to the Church’s most urgent question today: who is Peter?
