@elanorbanks I've been on a hiatus for about a year and a half. I just can't seem to get into the right frame of mind. :( I do plan on finishing it but who knows when? lol
English

Am I still a writer if I haven't written a word since Jan but I think about my novel every day?
What's the longest you've taken a hiatus from a project and still gone on to finish it?

@elanorbanks Why do exclamation points always get me excited?????
English

@CunliffeRich Maybe it depends how it turns out. Like, if I pick up the project again, it will prove I was "writing" all along internally - but if I never do, then I can't make the same claim...
English

@elanorbanks If you're not writing anything, then I'm going to say you're not a writer at the moment.
Mine's a minority opinion, perhaps, but I do believe that one characteristic of writers is that they write.
English

@WriterNatSwift Old school. You could reframe it as historical fiction?

@elanorbanks Staring/screaming at my screen in frustration is still writing.

@elanorbanks I just brought my play Black & White City Blues into the PDW at the Actors Studio here in NYC and I read the first draft at the studio in 1978/79. I completed the play last month. Not good at math I'd say close to 50 years.
English

@elanorbanks Oh it's definitely much better hahahah.
Looking forward to getting book 3 out there so I can start something new though 👀
English

@FallenStar1985 It turns out we're all just fumbling through... Sometimes life is complicated and maybe it makes sense to just shelve that one thing and pick it up when we can.
English

@elanorbanks Thank you for posting this! I've been so disheartened lately b/c I haven't "seriously" wrote since the beginning of November. The replies here make me feel so much better. I've yet to finish any projects though so I can't answer your question myself.

@Mariah94350720 Ah, the problem is, that sounds like hard work and dedication. Where are the quick fixes, I ask you!?
English

@elanorbanks I wonder why many writers don't like it. I understand those who have deadlines. For me, it's time when I can write several versions of a scene, find some pictures and songs to inspire me, or work for a week on a singular character's line. And then my story becomes better.
English

@SakamakiChloe I think this is my problem, that I "finished" a draft in Jan and I know it needs ripping apart and basically starting over. I just haven't the heart yet.
English

@elanorbanks I didn't touch my first official book for almost a year after I "finished it" , but now ive deleted the ending and decided to do a complete rewrite
English

@rbconklin1 Yes, I am basically the Mozart of the written word. I'm glad someone else has noticed.
English

@elanorbanks I think as long as you're still writing inside your head, you're still a writer. Wasn't it Mozart who composed everything in his imagination before setting notes to paper?
English

@elanorbanks I shelved my WIP after a year and wrote another novel. I returned to it a year later with fresh eyes and it’s in the beta stage now.
English

@elanorbanks I have decided on my book title but yet to write
It's been more than a year
English

@authorgurpreetd Same. I feel I'm still connected to the project, but I'm not realistically sitting down and working on it any time soon...
English

@Mariah94350720 I'm hoping when (if??) I get to that stage I will enjoy it!
English

@elanorbanks About a year, maybe more. I didn't write a word for a few years but didn't have anything started. Then I wrote my first draft, got stuck during editing, wrote several short stories. Now I'm editing the 1rst one. I love editing.
