As we keep expanding the public sector, productivity continues to decline. At some point, you have to ask who’s creating the wealth to support an ever-growing share of the economy that depends on it. Great video, Aidan. To summarise: you’re absolutely right about the scale of the transmission build, the N-1 requirements and the associated costs at 500KV and keeping those electric fields tamed. Power Eng 1.01 - Build generation close to the load centre and close to the energy-dense fuel source. Edison and Westinghouse understood this over 125 years ago and that’s the same tech we use today, and utilities spent the next century refining that principle. Australia seems to be rediscovering it the hard way. Much of the recent planning has focused on technologies with very low power density (solar, wind) that, at the scale required, are often located far from the major load centres, driving the need for extensive new transmission. That’s why Project Ironbark reached a very different conclusion (but obvious to power engineers): make better use of the strong transmission infrastructure we already have around our major load centres, rather than assuming we need massive new transmission expansion.

Not avoiding it. Reducing firm baseload while scaling solar and wind raises total system costs from intermittency—backup capacity, storage, overbuild, grid upgrades and lower thermal utilization. Wholesale prices can fall via merit order, but retail bills reflect those full costs plus policy supports. High-VRE cases (Germany, parts of Australia) show elevated bills; nuclear-heavy ones stay lower. Correlation is real; taxes and design amplify it.

Data is mixed. High-solar countries like Australia (~20% solar generation) average ~USD 0.26/kWh residential, Spain ~0.26, Chile ~0.23. Germany (~18%) hits 0.41 largely from taxes and levies. France (nuclear ~70%, solar ~6%) is ~0.28; US (~9% solar) ~0.19. System integration and firming add costs at high VRE shares, but taxes, networks and market design drive most bill differences.

No details on the transmission connections? Why does one corridor have them announced while another doesn’t? Maybe for the other transmission projects they’re just testing interest. If there’s not enough, the next step is making the connection fully taxpayer-funded - not a good position to be in for tax-payers. Also why is the NSW Minister pushing, what does she see that AEMO doesn’t see. I just hope it’s not the usual political incentive of looking good among peers instead of delivering the lowest-cost outcome for consumers. My guess is NSW now knows it can’t just close the coal stations north of Sydney, so this is a Hail Mary to push through increasingly uneconomic, bill-increasing projects.

Just a tiny teaser ramble. I think I’m starting to see more clearly what’s going on with transmission. The clash between NSW government and AEMO exposes a fundamental question that’ll require much deeper unpacking. Is one 500kv line enough, or do we need two?

I thought I muted you after your death post. Anyway, pointing out laws and regulations doesn’t settle the question. The issue isn’t legality; it’s whether the choices being made are actually in consumers’ interests or is it contributing to the increasing power prices we’re seeing.
