Y’all, my daughter wanted to do an experiment to see which flower makes the best natural dye, and this is so cool! It’s turning out so well. The purple petunia is blowing my mind. Bougainvillea is outstanding also.

Gentle, poetic shard of cinema that’ll be taken down by the end of today. It transported me to 2014, when my mother passed and the men in my family tried — mostly unsuccessfully — to be there for one another. See it if you can. It’s only 20 mins but it’ll stay with you.

Done. This is a retrospective. The fact that the first re-registration had multiple deadlines, a controversy involving a Nigerian developed SIM registration app, and back and forths about cost implications shows that we're not serious people labarijournal.com/ghanas-sim-reg…

For Africa is a country, I wrote about Galamsey and it’s long term effects on Ghana’s food system and eventually public health. In truth, Ghana’s food chain is corrupted and has been for years. This article explores what the means for Ghanaians.

Piracy is the most effective way to preserve movie history, whether you like it or not... Especially older obscure films... Great filmmakers understand that fact... Werner Herzog is certainly one of them. There are millions of cinephiles today who wouldn't have been exposed to great films if not for piracy. In countries like India, it is the only way to watch older movies, since the other options are unaffordable for normal working people. Most studios & almost all the streaming platforms don't care about preserving movies, but the pirates do. We are forever indebted to their passion & hard work.
Jon W. (v2)@rarefilmsguy

Werner Herzog was on a podcast a few weeks ago defending piracy again: "Piracy is the most succesful form of distribution nowadays. So be it. But films are accessible and this is why very young people discover them" 🎙️ Freakonomics Radio Podcast Ep. 665

Trailer debut for “Allah Is Not Obliged,” a feature-length animated film that brings one of the most widely read and debated African novels of the past 25 years into animation. Directed by Zaven Najjar, the 77-minute film adapts the 2000 novel by Ivorian writer Ahmadou Kourouma, which won the Prix Renaudot and the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens in France. The story follows Birahima, a Guinean boy who becomes a child soldier while moving across Liberia and Sierra Leone during the civil wars of the 1990s, searching for his aunt after the death of his mother. Like the novel, the film is narrated in Birahima’s blunt, ironic voice. He describes war, death, and survival using the language of a child who constantly consults, and pushes back against, four different dictionaries. Traveling with a sorcerer, he becomes both a “grigriman” and a child soldier. With voice performances by Aboubakar Hanta Christ Traoré (SK07), Thomas Ngijol, Marc Zinga, and Annabelle Lengronne, “Allah Is Not Obliged” premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2025, the world’s most visible animation showcase, and stands out for its use of animation to confront issues that are rarely treated in this form. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in France on March 4, 2026, distributed by BAC Films. #AnimatedFilm #AfricanCinema #ChildSoldiers #AnnecyFestival

Release poster premiere for "Allah n'est pas obligé" (Allah Is Not Obliged), the animated adaptation of Ivorian novelist Ahmadou Kourouma's Prix Renaudot and Prix Goncourt des Lycéens-winning novel. The film arrives in French cinemas on March 4, 2026. Directed by Zaven Najjar and produced by Special Touch Studios, the film follows 10-year-old Birahima, a Guinean orphan who sets out with the sorcerer Yacouba to find his aunt in Liberia. Their journey takes a devastating turn when they're swept into the chaos of the Liberian and Sierra Leonean civil wars, and Birahima becomes a child soldier. Kourouma's 2000 novel tells this harrowing story with dark irony, filtering the brutality of tribal warfare and the child soldier experience through a young boy's voice. The Ivorian writer, who died in 2003, was one of the most celebrated Francophone African authors of his generation. The animated feature had its world premiere in the Official Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2025. Voice cast includes rapper SK07 (Aboubakar Hanta Christ Traoré), Thomas Ngijol, and Marc Zinga. A France-Belgium-Luxembourg-Canada co-production. 77 minutes. Distributed by BAC Films. #AllahnestpasObligé #AllahIsNotObliged #AhmadouKourouma #SpecialTouchStudios #Animation #AfricanCinema #AnnecyFestival #ChildSoldiers #WestAfrica #Liberia #SierraLeone #CoteDIvoire #AfricanLiterature #FilmTwitter #Animation2026
