What happens when love quietly leaves, and the relationship stays? One day she is young and free, not in age, but in heart. She wakes up and goes about her day, she works, she plays, she laughs, alone or with friends, doing the things she loves without asking permission from anyone’s absence. Until one day, her heart learns of love. She looks, she likes, she wants to have him or to be had by him, and she cannot tell where the wanting ends and where she begins. At first, it is still love. She has light in her, soul, her body is still still whole. But soon, a relationship starts to form around it and slowly, she begins to despise the privileges she once had. Freedom starts to feel like waiting and the once sweet solitude now feels like loneliness. Of all the places there are in the world, she wants to be woven only into the one where he is. She knew she was beautiful, she moved with confidence, with her head held high like the world already agreed with her presence. But now she searches for herself in the tone of his voice, and the timing of his replies. Sleep is no longer rest. It is constantly interrupted by the thoughts of him being with another. They say happiness is to love and to be loved. But sometimes, I wonder what happens when love quietly leaves and the relationship stays? Because honestly, relationships are capable of so much. They can change someone's life in a blink of an eye, for better, or for worse. What began in love now begins to change her without it. Her heart starts to grow, dropping the innocence to strengthen her as she gives pieces of herself to something that is no longer giving back. Which makes me wonder again; will she still be that girl when she finally encounters the horror of seeing hatred come from the eyes she once smiled about in her sleep? When the hands that held her in ways that made every other place in the world unworthy learn how to push her away? When the words that planted the seed of love in her become bitter, will she desire to be the girl she once was or will she decide that losing herself was all worth it? We cannot know the joy of loving and being loved without binding ourselves to another. But that bond is only as strong as the love within it. But even when love leaves, the bond still takes and alters things. And it can demand pieces of you that are never returned. What once felt like heaven does not turn into hell because love failed, but because it is no longer there to hold the bond. Relationships change us. Some for the better and others destroy us. So, when we choose to enter one, we must take time to ask ourselves, if love leaves, will I still recognize myself, and what will be left to hold me then? #Latenightthoughts
