My church is showing The Odyssey this Sunday instead of doing divine liturgy I was a little taken back at the idea at first because it seemed weird & unorthodox But my priest explained how Lupita Nyong’o as Hellen of Troy was an archetype for Jesus Specifically by the way she’s been rejected by the world for not “looking the part” and doesn’t feel the need to prove who she is. She just slays the role because of who she is: a black queen After having a one on one meeting with my priest about my initial condition on this point, he explained to me why Christopher Nolan chose her and how she’s a good representation of Christ. That’s when it clicked: “all black women are queens so casting one as a queen only makes sense” Just like Jesus was the only son of God, it only takes one black woman in Ancient Greece to prove her worth and beauty above all the unexceptional white majority women And that’s exactly the Bible’s main message about God and why we need to watch the movie together as a church family — now more than ever, especially in a time where ICE is killing innocent people trying to liberate victims from being kidnapped by a fascist regime. Thank you Father Nigmus for showing us the way and not letting Scripture, God’s Word or the legalistic commands of apostolic succession supersede our right as believers from seeing God through a new lens — a lens as in a beautifully cinematically shot masterpiece seen through an Ari lens mounted on a 70mm imax camera built specifically for this movie. Right wing people spend more time being mad at liberal artists than they do about making good art themselves They think that just because art is woke that the art itself is bad Therefore if they just create something that isn’t woke, their art will be better But the right wing struggles to create anything of cultural impact or importance because we are focused on the wrong things and waste our time reacting rather than trying to create a more beautiful world. Nolan’s film is arguably less “anti-White” than the source material! Odysseus was the world’s first Jew. He fought on the wrong side of a war against civilization, in works penned by an unknown subversive whom we came to know as “Homer.” The Iliad and Odyssey are about Aryan destruction, and the Aryan’s replacement by a Mercurial trickster. Nolan’s modernism obscures the dark reality at the heart of this epic. The “Greeks” were never the Greeks.
