The issue isn’t whether the government should launch satellites or buy space services. The issue is whether a single billionaire who received billions in government contracts should also be pouring hundreds of millions into electing the politicians who oversee those contracts. Yes, Elon Musk’s companies won contracts because they provided capabilities the government wanted, often at competitive prices. But it’s also true that his businesses have benefited enormously from taxpayer-funded contracts, subsidies, loans, and regulatory decisions over many years. And while SpaceX is currently the dominant U.S. launch provider, it’s not the only aerospace company. Competitors include Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance, Rocket Lab, Northrop Grumman, and others. The government routinely contracts with multiple suppliers precisely to avoid dependence on one company. The question isn’t “who else would launch satellites?” The question is whether it’s healthy for a democracy when a government contractor with enormous financial interests is simultaneously spending huge sums to influence the politicians who award contracts and shape policy. Most people would be concerned about that regardless of whether the billionaire was Elon Musk, George Soros, or anyone else.

Elon Musk is not stealing from you. Gavin Newsom is stealing from you. Karen Bass is stealing from you. Tim Walz is stealing from you. Elizabeth Warren is stealing from you. AOC is stealing from you. Becoming wealthy does not make you evil. The people who take from you, promising to fix problems and then enriching themselves while trying to get you to hate those they're taking the money from... are evil.
