Honoured to have been appointed the inaugural Chair of the new, independent Cost Benefit Analysis Panel for the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Payment Systems Regulator (PSR). Looking forward very much to working with both institutions. fca.org.uk/news/press-rel…

Here's another view of craziness of 2023, showing the monthly average global surface temperature for each year, 1940-2023. December's record 1.78°C above the baseline may mark the largest monthly anomaly in more than 125,000 years.

The Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) blasted through its previous high and Earth is now heating up at a record pace of 15.96 Hiroshimas per Second (12 month running average) or 13.11 Hiroshimas per Second (36 month running average). This is not gobsmackery. This is pure f&%kery.

The current heat stress in Florida has not been this high this early in the season since satellite records began in 1985. Learn about measures to protect, relocate, and “bank” live fragments of coral to help Florida’s Coral Reef survive this heat crisis. climate.gov/news-features/…

Apologies in advance for not explaining this in any way, but here are the daily standard deviations for Antarctic sea ice extent for every day, 1989-2023, based on the 1991-2020 mean. Each blue line represents the SD's for a full year. Lighter is more recent. 2023 is in red.

This is absolutely bananas. There is NOTHING like this on the instrumental record. Its likely impact is probably immeasurable. But is it leading our news bulletins & on newspaper front pages? Nope.

'Beyond extreme' by definition. Ireland and the British Isles are at the epicentre of a major marine heatwave. We have not seen the North Atlantic look like this in modern records. Marine heatwaves are categorised from 1 to 5. There are hotspots hitting category 5.

This is getting to be absurd now... there's not even a close historic precedent for how warm the Atlantic Ocean water is. 🥵📈

@pmarca All sounds great, however, AGI is trained on humanity’s blood, sweat and tears. Hundreds of years of intellectual endeavour. It is not for one techbro to package up, sell it back to us. An open, sovereign wealth fund model is more appropriate. We are all involved in training it
