Quick HDR analysis #Directive8080 from Supermassive Games on PS5 and PS5 Pro (there is a free game trial on PS5). It’s most likely exactly the same HDR implementation on PC. Terrible HDR implementation 👎👎👎 The game is using Unreal Engine 5 and all Supermassive Games did was to simply enable the standard HDR in UE5 and surface the standard sliders in UE5 and call it a day. Its therefore we see 33, 15, 1000 and -4 in the in-game setup screen (picture 1). What gamer will know what 33, 15 and -4 means ??? Its completely un-intuitive why the values have these numbers, unless you are an UE5 developer, I guess. We do have decent explanations to what they adjust. Max Luminance: HDR Max Luminance adjust the upper midtones and output of the brightest light sources. I have not seen any go higher than 1000 nits (reflection from a flash light) even at 2000 nits setting. Most are much lower. Its a dark horror game, so this is not the most important. There might be brighter light sources later in the game. Paper White / Midtones: The HDR Brightness slider and HDR Mid Luminance slider basically does the same thing. They lift black levels, midtones and max luminance. Which is NOT what they are supposed to do. Black levels: The Min Luminance slider adjust the black level floor and shadows. The games shadows and black levels are massively lifted compared to SDR. Picture 2 is SDR and Picture 3 is HDR. HDR UI is the UI. Colors: Colors in HDR look different than in SDR. Its because the standard HDR solution in UE5 doesn’t use the colors / luts the artist created for the game. Its clear to see in picture 2 and 3. Recommended settings: In picture 4 you see the settings I think you can try. The most important is to get the best black levels in a horror game. Minus 10 is not quite as dark as SDR, but I think SDR has a bit crushed blacks. I also increased to 20 to get a bit higher max luminance and brightness in general. Crank max luminance to 2000 if you have a display capable of 1000+ nits. Less capable TV than that use, 1500 nits. Feel free to try out different settings or simply play in SDR. HDR Always On: We can unfortunately not turn HDR off in-game, so we can not use HDR Always On to get an SDR signal from the game with the colors the artists intended and use our TVs HDR features (Dynamic tone mapping and Pro 100 etc on LG OLEDs etc.). RenoDX: I didn’t try the PC version. But you should be able to use the RenoDX Multi-game mod since is an UE5 game. I could see on the RenoDX server, that there was some issues to get the Multi-game mod to work. I don’t know if it works now. RenoDX will in HDR use the colors / luts from SDR, fix the HDR tone mapping and give much better and intuitive settings.
