Consider this: suppose someone dies in the process of childbirth. (They are unambiguously dead — a freak accident cut off their head). Should we stop delivering the child? What if they’re just about to deliver the baby? How long should keep the body around before burial?

Guess what, the word "continuous" literally changes the entire model. A model with finite number of states is a TOTALLY different thing from a model with CONTINUOUS number of states.
