@VassiliouEU My thoughts exactly. You don’t walk away from a win… Instead, we can add his headstone to the Diplomat’s Graveyard that is the Cyprus Problem

@costast11 @eminations I think you’d be very surprised. Which is reflected in the voting. And in how GCs are treated when they cross to the North. I see you’re an Arsenal fan. I would compare it to fans who go to the game, versus ‘fans’ online. Online attracts the extremes - to put it nicely

@costast11 @eminations Re equal rights, it can take many forms. In Cyprus, the two communities are equal, despite the difference in size The same occurs in the EU ie Cyprus (0.2% of the EU population) has the same veto rights as Germany Most importantly, no one has more or less rights than the other

@embargoed @eminations If I am correct it was partial withdrawal. At the end of the day no need for Greek or Turkish troops here, the guarantee of the EU for a baby EU country like Cyprus is quite sufficient. Guarantee meaning all citizens have equal rights.

@costast11 @eminations It was phased withdrawal I don’t believe the EU is a real deterrent. NATO perhaps. What isn’t in question (I think) is that we are too small to protect ourselves. However that is done would form part of the agreement. Which each community would vote on

@eminations @costast11 Re the presence of the Turkish military, the last two settlement plans included ther withdrawal. Had they been accepted, they would be gone. So their presence is also tied to a settlement

@costast11 @embargoed Which is understandable, given the size & also if I may add, with great sadness, the lack of direction and very complicated foreign policy of Tr, which makes even me uncomfortable at times. Having said that, were there a will, we could have found a way. 🫣

@eminations @costast11 So, we all agree that a settlement would be positive and better than the status quo. From here, we can only hope that our respective leaders agree and work towards that. Then, it’s up to each community to decide

@eminations @costast11 You misunderstood me. I’m not advocating closing the crossings. Not at all In saying that if we say that no one who doesn’t recognise the other side can/should cross, then the result is to close. And that this would be both unhelpful and unrealistic

@embargoed @costast11 Why? Hasn't the average Cypriot paid enough for the antics ambitions and unacceptable misdemeanors of others. Since 2004 Cypriots have been able to rediscover many aspects of the 'other', forge friendship & build. Why stop that? Politics is one side of the coin. People another

@embargoed @costast11 Yes that's right. And I respect your honesty. I wish more would stand straight, and for something they truly believe in than behave like seasoned belly dancers.

@eminations @costast11 It seems (who knows for sure) that Greece and GCs are willing to gamble that Israel will help them to overpower Türkiye. To at least, balance the power. I would be wary of any state who is willing to help me so selflessly. You have to ask why. States serve themselves.

@embargoed @costast11 Regional developments have shown us, it's vital to solve our issue. But there's the 2nd elephant in the room. Israel. Unfortunately all is murkier now & while imo most Cypriots don't support Israeli aggression. Gov of RoC seems handcuffed to their regional ambitions.

@eminations @costast11 I understand your point of view. But you must recognise that if we apply that approach then we must close the crossings in both directions - until we find a settlement. I’m not sure that is helpful nor, at this stage, realistic

@costast11 @embargoed This is something I feel strongly about. I don't understand the logic of it. If you feel so strongly about it, then you don't carry a RoC ID or passport. You don't travel via Larnaca or cross over as you wish while simultaneously demanding recognition & assuming the victim role.

@costast11 @eminations Whether hard ball or more diplomatic, the TC people have accepted previous settlements and have elected a pro-settlement leader So, right now, it seems to be the GC side which is stalling/refusing. Likely because, in doing so, they have nothing to lose.

@costast@costast11·
@embargoed @eminations Why are you saying find a solution if you don't want 2 states. You are pushing the narrative of the new TC leader who has the same objective but in a more diplomatic way than his predecessor . One side can play hardball and then say we can't agree on a solution 1/1

@costast11 @eminations Two states is not the only solution. And I am not promoting that - nor any other solution. The two communities will decide. Not me I’n simply saying that, if people don’t want 2 states, then we need to agree an alternative. Because to refuse all other efforts leads to 2 states

@costast11 @eminations We need to find a new agreement, based on two sovereign communities. That may be a unitary, but most likely* a federal state *this has been the accepted formula for years TCs have accepted several settlement plans. Most recently 04 and 17. GCs did not. Their/your right to do so

@costast11 @eminations I am applying logic and am not promoting any solution. In case it isn’t clear, I’ll repeat Cyprus is a partnership state of two sovereign communities. This fact still applies regardless of how you believe the state was destroyed So, the way forward…

If a war between Greece and Turkey ever started, Greece could win without firing a single bullet. It could simply drop millions of DNA tests from the sky and it would win in 48 hours.
