@Idzie Haven't watched it yet, but there is a site that has crowdsourced content warnings and it looks like season 4 does not: doesthedogdie.com/media/263316?i…

@CovingtonEDU In fact, I am like 99% sure I've seen a parody thread from @Sisyphus38 about learning to ride a mountain bike that way ...
English

@Idzie Just feeling for you and sending good thoughts.
English

@hsofia Maybe you just have exquisitely tuned sketchy dude radar?
English

@CovingtonEDU What's so frustrating is that every single person I've ever seen arguing for the "flaw at the heart of human nature" view seems so stubbornly insistent that it *is* a dilemma. Absolutely refusing every attempt to draw them into deeper and more productive analysis.
English

@CovingtonEDU I hear you. But also, “Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.”
English

@merrysaysboof @GrobieLauren @ShmaitlinShmobe @Mlongegan @heymrsbond But also, just because there exists a precise medical diagnosis labeled "test anxiety", I don't see why that means students are wrong to use those words in their everyday sense. The existence of technical jargon does not invalidate other uses of language.

@annastolzanna @MarcusLuther6 When our kids were little and we chose to unschool I hoped that more lived examples of other paths would make such a cultural shift more likely.
I'm less convinced of the rhetorical value of living outside of systems now. I wish I knew what might move the needle.
English

@emilesnyder @MarcusLuther6 Hopefully, society will be able to trust people and value authentic learning some day. Too much fear and the need to control poison the heart of individuals and the whole system. Also, competition as the base mode has to go. Lofty goals but maybe one day 🥹❤️
English

@annastolzanna @MarcusLuther6 I don't have much advice for folks in the system, just perspective from outside it.
English

@emilesnyder @MarcusLuther6 Or having them grade themselves (I don't want that for reasons I can elaborate on)? I'm honestly curious what you mean because simply refusing to grade will get me fired immediately.
English

@annastolzanna @MarcusLuther6 I feel for teachers who wish for that path almost as much as I feel for students stuck in our current system.
English

@annastolzanna @MarcusLuther6 Well, it seems likely to require leaving public schooling, unfortunately.
I was speaking at both the personal and societal level though.
We, as a society, can choose otherwise. But it seems like a long long project to convince people that we should.
English

@annastolzanna @MarcusLuther6 Well, Shevek's path is possible. It's not that we *must* coerce students with grades, it's that we choose to. And so we can choose not to, instead.
English

@MarcusLuther6 It is precisely this that makes me want to get out of teaching ever since I began 8 years ago. Shevek's "If you do not want to do the work, you should not do it." captures how I feel about students not wanting to study, yet I must force them with grades. It's sickening.

@erinrpineda @cblack__ I kid you not, they read that book for *hours.*
BIL finally had to tap out.
So, long winded way of asking, do field guides to caterpillars exist?
English

@erinrpineda @cblack__ BIL thinks "it's a field guide, how long can he possibly want to listen to this; 5minutes?"

@CovingtonEDU Please bring edutwitter to fediverse 🙏🙂

@HumResPro The revelation isn't what the teacher is doing, it's what the Ss *aren't* doing. It's compliance porn.
English

@HumResPro Struck by one moment in particular, where you ask, after watching the first keystone video, "who watches this and feels like it's a revelation."
Don't you think it's authority figures who feel that they are unable to get compliance from students?
