@emilybethhill My students read chpt 4 and loved it! One of them even changed his whole master’s thesis to write on theology and economics. Hopefully that’s encouraging!

I just finished this magnificent book. As I’ve mulled it over, I feel like it’s going to stick with me for a while, especially the theological critiques of marketing practices. Stellar job, @emilybethhill; thank you for your hard work!

Help me think theologically about the idea of something being a necessary evil, particularly in a ministry context. ex. Approaches to marketing, church leadership or technology that are theologically suspect. What makes something a valid, necessary evil? Resources, thoughts?

But many critics of markets restrict their critique to a very narrow variety of capitalist markets, which are rightly criticized. But alternative market formations should be considered. I try to do that by looking at markets in this book.

Do markets make us more virtuous or more sinful? This is one question I wrestle with in my book "Work Out Your Salvation" (preorder now: tinyurl.com/yym5dv2d) I researched and wrote a dissertation and how this book because existing answers did not satisfy me.

@emilybethhill I was grateful to have a theological engagement of such issues! The gender implications will be downstream, I imagine. But, for what it's worth, I'll be assigning a couple chapters of your book to an ethics course and using it extensively in a chapter of my next book!

@emilybethhill I’ve also heard Amy Peeler is excellent 🤝. Both she and Favale are on my list, which, as you can understand is very long 🙇‍♂️

1. Day and night aren’t bodies, so the analogy doesn’t obtain. 2. “Born eunuchs” are slaves destined for castration, or infertile men, or those born without/undescended testicles. Ergo male. Maleness is not merely phenotypical. It’s multifacetedly biological.

@josephmljr I didn't love the podcast, but the book could be good. I suspect she is a little more conservative than I am. I know Dan Patterson was reading it

@emilybethhill Gendered language for God is indeed complex. This has come highly recommended to me, and I have yet to engage it. Have you encountered her work? Check this out! a.co/d/8IoqrvI

@josephmljr I've heard of it and listened to her on a podcast, but haven't read it. I have been enjoying Women and the Gender of God by Amy Peeler and appreciated The Kindness of God by Janet Soskice (need to read more of this one)

@josephmljr Maybe we shouldn’t refer to God as “he,” but I know that was beside the point of this whole thread which I also appreciated

4. The gender of both proper and improper nouns is not slavishly correlative with the bodily gender of objects signaled by said nouns. Also, to refer to the Holy Spirit as other than “he” means God is not one.
