Baffled that sustainability is seen as optional; survival shouldn't be a niche interest. Appreciates a good otter. Northern. He/him.

@pigreen1 @DrFrancesRyan I mean, it kind of is. Labour spent the entirety of their last 13 years in power persecuting claimants, and Starmer and Reeves made it clear before the election they'd do the same.

Just incredibly bleak that when a Labour government is finally in power, disabled people still have to wake up to front pages calling them a blight on society.

@Overourwall @we_sell_boxes @memorialdevice If you've got a good spot at a gig & then a gaggle of tall fellas push in front of you chattering & farting badly, you don't stay put because it used to be good. If you do, you lose the point of being at the gig in the first place.

@Overourwall @we_sell_boxes @memorialdevice Bluesky is almost certain to enshittify. The cycle is: create great service > monetise with charging & ads > cut costs by making the service shitter now everyone's on board & it's a hassle for them to leave. But that's no reason to stay here being yelled at by bigots every day.

The world’s first electric car sharing scheme? Not a fancy Californian or Japanese scheme, but the Witkar, launched in Amsterdam by Luud Schimmelpennink in 1972. They cost 10 cents/km to use, and recharged in 7 mins. 35 cars were available, but the company collapsed in the 1980s.

@empiresend @nee_massey None of us are indigenous to Twitter, Ian. You have fully functional alternatives right here on the device you're looking at. It's not a national invasion, it's more like having a tall fella come stand in front of you at a gig & fart badly. Just move a metre to a clear space.

@empiresend @nee_massey Have you thought that comparison through? Plenty of indigenous people who didn't flee got slaughtered. It's easy for us white men to shrug off the bigotry but seeing the intense racism that people of colour get firehosed with on here I don't think we can criticise leaving.

i'm sticking here, to twitter, btw. i know a lot of folk are leaving, i respect that move, but i'm going to hang out here, subvert from within, hold the powers that be to account with my unwavering enthusiasm for public transit and arboreal growth.

I wish Justin Welby well. A fine man who must be suffering immense personal pain, who I have seen bring great wisdom to almost impossible problems. There seem to be few people in public life with the decency and courage to even speak up for their friend.

@Bill_Esterson No money to reverse Tory cuts that keep millions of kids in poverty because you're going to spend it on the military.

The Tories really do have a brass neck. Defence spending was below 2.5% for the whole of their time in government from 2010 to 2024. They hollowed out our armed services. Now they ask when Labour are going to reverse their cuts in defence spending!

5. In conclusion, I'm staying for now, using the #Xdissenter hashtag in my profile. I also have accounts on Threads and BlueSky. But if we're going to leave, let's do it together, and decide which platform to migrate to. Your views are welcome, as ever.

1. Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of staying on this platform. Pro: We were here long before Musk took it over. We built this. Con: He has used our creation to help elect a far-right autocrat, and build his own grim political career. 🧵

@emlynsshoes @IrvineWelsh Fair dos. I haven’t had a TV for over 20 years therefore avoiding the main source of fascist content - particularly during ‘covid’ where peak tyranny and fascism prevailed and began via mass formation psychosis to be amplified and echoed in the vast majority of the population🙏

@IanH94621212 @IrvineWelsh Every day on here I see fascism and racism even though I don't follow any of the people posting it. If you're managing to avoid that then great, but there's no doubt that fascist content has been actively promoted in recent months.

@IrvineWelsh Can understand and sympathise with the desire to communicate elsewhere. However the last paragraph about X being a ‘Nazi…cesspit’ is a tad harsh and too ‘broad stroke’ for me. I come across objectionable material (to me) from time to time on here but ‘Nazi cesspit’?🤷🏻‍♂️

I started my career as a cleaner in the NHS. I learnt a lot about the world in that role. Some people treated me with respect, but many treated me badly. Cleaners hold hospitals together. I will absolutely judge you on how you treat the cleaners & porters.

We wish we could eradicate ‘just a’ from NHS vocabulary. Every single person plays their part, and it couldn’t happen without everyone.

@bencoates1 In a time when people are getting worse off & expect to get worse still in future, they're not going to flock to offers of minor tweaks from people who are currently doing well. It's going to be populist scammers or a radical vision that's uncomfortable for the super rich.

There’s maybe a lesson there for those fighting populism elsewhere. People do not want guarantees of stability. They want to upend the status quo.

Harris’s campaign backfired partly because people heard her saying “Trump’s a wannabe dictator who’ll wreck the whole system!” and instead of being horrified, they thought “Good! Yes please! Wreck it all!”
