Many people look at a plantain farm and see beautiful green leaves and easy money. They think you just put a sucker in the ground, wait a few months, and harvest a big bunch. But don't be deceived: successful plantain farming is a game of numbers. If you don’t know your numbers, you aren't running a business, you’re just having an expensive hobby. The first set of numbers is about spacing. You have to decide exactly how many plants to put on one hectare of land. If you plant them too far apart, you are wasting land and money. If you plant them too close, the plants will fight for sunlight and food, and your bunches will be tiny. Finding the perfect balance, like 3m \times 2m, is the difference between a farm that thrives and one that fails. The second set of numbers is about timing. A plantain plant takes about 9 to 12 months to produce. If you don't calculate your planting date correctly, you will harvest during the rainy season when everyone else is harvesting. When the market is full of plantains, the price drops. The smart farmer calculates his irrigation so he can harvest during the dry season when plantains are scarce and the price is double or triple. The third set of numbers is about management and "suckers." Each plantain plant produces "babies" called suckers. If you let five suckers grow around one mother plant, they will all "eat" from the same soil, and none of them will produce a heavy bunch. You have to be disciplined. You must count and prune them so that only the strongest "daughter" and "granddaughter" remain. This math ensures you have a harvest this year, next year, and the year after. Finally, you must look at weight versus cost. It costs the same amount of money to weed the grass around a plant that gives you a 5kg bunch as it does for one that gives you a 25kg bunch. The 5kg bunch might not even pay for the labor, but the 25kg bunch is pure profit. In the end, plantain farming isn't just about soil and rain; it’s about addition, subtraction, and multiplication. You can love your plants, but you must respect your spreadsheet. If the numbers don't add up, the farm won't stand.
