@sponge_research Looks like stomatocysts of chrysophyte algae

Anyone know what these are?!? They are in the freshwater sponge spicule prep for the sample from Alaska. They are siliceous just like the diatom and sponge elements in the spicule prep. They appear to be hollow with a singular aperture. #freshwater

@sponge_research Eunapius fragilis - presuming that all relevant spicules are shown. This species is probable the best competitor for space among all North American freshwater sponges. It can even overgrow & kill zebra mussel clusters.

@SANICHOLS_DU @sponge_research @laspongehunters Interesting! Were they just ordinary gemmules with green color or the special ones? Green gemmules i mentioned are functionally different, they have no thick 3layered theca and contain lots of symbiotic algae.

@laspongehunters Hard to tell from the small patch. Either Spongilla or Ephydatia First time I have ever seen green ones in person.

Today I've seen this creature regenerating a large hole in its body in ~3 minute. It just folded and then got back into its shape without any damage. Definitely not a thing that normal animals tend to do... Nonbilateranians 💙

I can hardly believe they're real! These Mediterranean carnivorous sponges have certainly come a long way and seem to be thriving in our aquarium. They've grown quite a lot! Here's hoping they will live long and happilly🤞

Eunapius fragilis (with larvae!) as a substrate for tons of Nais. Assemblages of animals associated with fw sponges depend on the waterbody. This river is always full of sponge-dwelling worms. #spongethursday
