The vision for collectibles, as simply as possible. Most of the goods on the internet are under the tyranny of subscriptions, paywalls, and licenses. We own nothing on the internet we pay for. And often not even the things we make. I do not own this tweet, for example. Even though I wrote it. IRL is different. We have property rights for practically everything we buy. We can gift, trade, resell, destroy, collect, convey in our estate, etc. Collectibles is a bit of a misnomer. The goal is to allow internet goods to inherit the same ownership rights as things in the real world. This fundamentally rearranges the leverage points and economics of all content, taking power away from aggregators and putting it in the hands of creators and publishers. Plus, it’s a step function improvement for users. Ownership means you own the good even if the interface you bought it from goes away. I can buy a movie, and when I’m done, give it to someone else. I can enjoy a single album without paying for 200 million songs I will never listen to. When you think of a collectible, think of it simply as wrapping a digital good with property rights. Like RWAs for bits instead of atoms.
