We had a great run, but alas, one of our seismic stations was consumed by lava this morning.
Quite sad watching the waveforms first showing signs of impending lava doom, and then losing contact altogether.
RIP! 🌋☠️🔥

After 3 years and 5 eruptions, we finally have our first casualty. RIP to the Melhóll (MELH/meh) seismic station, which has faithfully recorded all the action on the #Reykjanes Peninsula since it was installed in June 2020. All data was safely telemetered up to its dying moments

I'm so proud of my wife for becoming a professor at FAU! Are you interested in hydrothermal systems? Carbon capture? The cycling of elements through ocean crust? She's looking for students!
Joachim Hornegger@Hornegger
#FAU is a place of constant change: Please welcome with me our new #FAUprof for #geochemistry and ore deposit. Barbara Kleine-Marshall is currently at the @uni_iceland and will join @UniFAU June 1, 2023. I am happy to have her with us. #1innovator

#PhysicsOfVolcanoes9 is over.
- Great meeting, met old colleagues & got to know many students
- 4 brilliant key note talks by @epseibl, @magma_jule, @volcanofile & Miriam
- Edgar won the photo contest
Looking forward to seeing you next year! Thanks BGR for hosting.

Great mid-@iavcei2023 trip to Taupo.
For volcanologists, knowing the material properties of volcanic products is essential and allows to show off in a bar….
Lesson to learn: heat capacity of pumice is low!

Inspired by @vmsg_uk, Thomas Walter @VOLCAPSE & myself have initiated the German pendant, the annual (since 2015) 'Physics of Volcanoes' meeting.
This year, it will be hosted at BGR in Hannover (1-3 March).
Keynote speakers: @volcanofile, @epseibl, Miriam Reiss & @magma_jule

@andri_gunn Looks like your having a great time. Are you retrieving our rotational sensor on this trip?

Although the #Fagradalsfjall tremor and eruption have stopped, it could come back! This happened many times in the 2021 eruption. The 2022 eruption itself could even be construed as a resuming of the 2021 eruption.

@BjorndeBakker1 @rUv This one is still growing. Last year's vent 5 reached a height of about 120m height in the end according to measurements by @GBirkefeldt. The chemistry is apparently identical to last year's eruption according to @rockhardIES
English

@BjorndeBakker1 @Haskoli_Islands The edifice is building up and at some point the rim will be closed on all sides. The activity in the crater is then more difficult to watch. But lava can still leave in tubes that are not visible.

Postdoc opportunity in seismology + machine learning, to develop a Deep Learning algorithm to denoise data from low-cost seismometers and extract information on earthquake processes, with focus on @raspishake sensors in Haiti: emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/CDD/UMR…

@GhostTrainPhoto @fencingtobba @egill_arni If you are into hiking and sportive the hike is not a problem. However, the ground is uneven and conditions e.g. sight, wind direction, wind speed, temperature might change rapidly. So you should bring at least 2l of water, food, warm and waterproof clothes and a gps or compass.
English

@DOMESTIC_TERROR We are on the way on the airport and will arrive around midnight tonight in Iceland.
