We at Pioneer Institute mourn the loss of Tom Birmingham even as we are thankful for having had the opportunity to get to know this kind and brilliant man when in office and later, when he spent several years as Pioneer’s distinguished senior fellow in education.

A Chelsea kid who knew the awesome power that hard work, street smarts and education can unleash when used in service to others. RIP Tom Birmingham.

Though he walked through rooms of power and privilege, he stayed true to his roots and never forgot where he came from or what mattered. His passing is a great loss for the Commonwealth and my heart goes out to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

@Marc_Bertrand Thank you for the kind words @Marc_Bertrand - I recall when my father taped that conversation, I believe it was shortly before a great Pats-Dophins game at Gillette which I have fond memories of attending - I would welcome the link if anyone has it.

@Patriots Thank you @Patriots. I remember my father bringing us to games at Foxboro Stadium in the 90s, rooting for the team since before the dynasty. Watching games together - and attending at least one in person each season - was a cherished family tradition. We appreciate your thoughts.

Thomas F. Birmingham, the former state Senate president and gubernatorial candidate, died Friday at 73. “I love this business,” he told CommonWealth magazine in 1997. “I go to sleep at night and can’t wait to wake up and come in to work the next day.” bostonglobe.com/2023/01/21/met…
