In my painting of Virgil and Beatrice in Canto II of Dante’s Inferno, I sought to capture the quiet but decisive moment when divine mercy intervenes through the figure of Beatrice, whose radiance pierces the shadow of human fear. I present Virgil as both noble and burdened, a guide chosen not by his own power but by grace, sent to lead Dante out of confusion and toward truth. In Beatrice I tried to express a love that is both tender and commanding, a heavenly charity that moves all things toward God and sets the journey in motion. Through this encounter, I reflect on how even in the darkest uncertainty, the soul is never abandoned but is called forward by a light that originates beyond itself. #dantesinferno #divinecomedy

This painting is not nearly done. The face mostly is, but everything else is just blocked in. I took a painting workshop with @ericarmusik to learn oil painting techniques, and this is the piece I worked on. He is an amazing teacher. I highly recommend him. I will post more pics as I complete the painting.

Drawing G.K. Chesterton back in 2020. Charcoal on paper 14 x 17” Sold to private collection In G. K. Chesterton I find a mind that rejoices in the clarity of truth and the wonder of the ordinary, and his writings continually draw me back to the firm ground of the Faith. His conversion to Catholicism was not a surrender of reason but its fulfillment, as he saw in the Church the guardian of both mystery and common sense. Through works like Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man, he defends the dignity of man and the reality of Christ with a wit that disarms and a conviction that strengthens belief. I am reminded through his words that joy, gratitude, and humility are not small virtues but the very marks of a soul rightly ordered toward God. #gkchesterton #chesterton #catholic

In my drawing of Saint Padre Pio, I wanted to capture the deep interior life that marked his priesthood, especially the quiet intensity of his gaze as a man who bore the wounds of Christ and offered himself in union with Him. I focused on the humility of his Capuchin habit and the hidden suffering he carried, recalling how he lived with the stigmata and extraordinary spiritual gifts while remaining a simple confessor devoted to souls. Through this work I tried to express not only his suffering but his peace, inviting the viewer to reflect on his call to prayer, trust, and perseverance in the spiritual life. ✅ signed, limited edition prints available: ericarmusik.com/workszoom/5680… #catholicart #catholic #padrepio

The Agony in the Garden, oil on panel 24 x 36” 2016. Available for purchase In my painting of the Agony in the Garden I tried to enter into the terrible solitude of Jesus Christ as He prays in Garden of Gethsemane on the night before His Passion. This moment has always struck me as one of the most human and yet most divine in the Gospel, when Christ freely accepts the suffering that He knows awaits Him. I wanted His posture and expression to carry the weight of that decision, the quiet struggle between the natural fear of suffering and the perfect obedience to the will of the Father. For a traditional Catholic soul this scene reveals the depth of Christ’s love, because in that lonely prayer He embraces the chalice that will lead to the Cross and ultimately to our redemption. It reminds me that every Christian must also pass through moments of Gethsemane, learning to trust God even when the path ahead is dark. #catholicart #sacredart #catholic

In this painting I focused on the figure of John the Baptist speaking with Andrew the Apostle and Peter the Apostle at the threshold of a great turning point. I wanted John to appear as the last voice of the old covenant, the prophet who recognizes the coming of the Lamb and directs others toward Him rather than toward himself. As he speaks, there is both urgency and humility in his witness, because his mission is to prepare hearts and then step aside. Andrew listens with a soul ready for truth, while Peter stands beside him, still unaware of how completely his life will soon change. This moment reveals the beauty of John’s vocation. He points the way to Christ with total selflessness, reminding us that the greatest task of every prophet and every Christian is simply to lead others to the Lord and then allow Him to call them forward. #catholic #sacredart

The Last Supper, charcoal on paper, 14 x 17 2022. Limited edition prints available ericarmusik.com/workszoom/5081… In my drawing of the Last Supper, I focused on the solemn moment when Christ raises the bread and institutes the Holy Eucharist, the moment when ordinary bread becomes His true Body given for the salvation of the world. I tried to capture the quiet authority and sacred gravity of Our Lord as He blesses it before His apostles, knowing the sacrifice that awaits Him. As I worked, I reflected on the mystery that this same sacrifice continues on our altars today, and I wanted the drawing to invite the viewer into reverence for the Real Presence. #catholic #jesuschrist

Raising the “Resurrection” for the first time in the hand-built frame I made for it, Holy Week 2019. Oil on panel 48 x 96”. Permanent collection of Saint Sebastian Parish, Akron Ohio In my 2019 oil on panel painting The Resurrection (48 × 96″), now installed at St. Sebastian Parish, I sought to render the central mystery of the Christian faith with a physical immediacy rooted in the classical tradition — Christ rising powerfully from the tomb, light breaking into darkness, the human body glorified yet bearing the memory of sacrifice. I approached the figure with dramatic chiaroscuro and careful anatomical realism to make the supernatural moment tangible, drawing the viewer from shadow into radiance, from death into life; the victory banner He carries, traditionally white with a red cross in Catholic iconography is a sign of His triumph over sin and death, the red recalling the Passion and the white proclaiming purity and resurrection, presenting Christ as the divine standard-bearer under whom the faithful gather in hope. #CatholicX #jesuschrist #sacredart

FINISHED! Yesterday, I completed my 17th panel in my 40-painting Dante’s Inferno series. This panel is Canto 11: The Tomb of Pope Anastasius, oil on panel, 48 x 60 inches, 2026. I would like to thank my apprentices, Marky Barto and Claire Hess, for their help in the early stages of the composition. I could not have executed this so quickly without you. This also puts me just three paintings away from the halfway point of the series. I hope to reach that milestone by the end of 2026 so that Dr. Kleinhenz and I can host a podcast reflecting on the work completed over the past nine years and looking ahead to panels 21–40. his canto serves as a brief pause in Inferno, allowing Dante Alighieri to explain how Hell is structured and why each sin is punished the way it is. Here, Virgil outlines the moral logic governing the lower circles, showing that punishments grow more severe as sins become more deliberate and destructive, especially those involving violence, fraud, and betrayal. The open but empty tomb of Pope Anastasius emphasizes this progression: his soul has not yet arrived because his ultimate punishment lies deeper in Hell, underscoring how spiritual betrayal and heresy, the corruption of truth and faith, demand harsher judgment. This moment clarifies that Hell is not chaotic, but a carefully ordered system of divine justice, preparing the reader for the darker and more complex realms ahead. #dantesinferno #divinecomedy
