On March 19th, 2024, the Hong Kong parliament passed security law Article 23 expanding the state's ability to arrest and sentence people for "external interference" and or "inciting hatred". Meaning, "talk to foreign reporters" or "say things the CCP doesn't like". Dozens of arrests for things like "seditious" posts on social media happened soon after.

It is jarring when you see it in person, a human tragedy in real time.
