@johnarnold My mail is regularly delayed between when they scan it in through and processing and when it gets to my house. Can't understand why 6 day delivery is sacrosanct!

Of the two tweets I've ever posted that drew the most pushback, one argued that the USPS should shift to 3 day/week letter delivery and the other that the criminal justice reform movement should prioritize making prisons safe over expanding Pell Grants. I stand by both.

.@GovKathyHochul speaking at @ABetterNY this morning talking about how expensive it is to buy a house. “I think Bill and I were about 30 when we got our first home. Now it's middle age—40! I know 40 year olds don't want to be called “middle aged.” I get it, but you are.”

@ericjkatz Eric, I'm telling you -- there's been a marked change for the worse in the last couple days. People have to forcefully push the door back open with all of their weight, and stay there, once it starts to close.

The big news out of the NY Capitol this week is the Senate elevator doors have seemingly developed a mind of their own and are actively trying to murder people.

Good stuff from Hochul regulatory reform czar Zoe Jacob's, and for my housers she drops hints of reforms coming soon to the NYS Building Code on single staircase! capitolpressroom.org/2026/03/13/gov…

@mattyglesias In a state like New York where PFL is a companion to disability benefits in the workers comp system, the policing comes from the insurers.

@ericjkatz @CUNYLaw Except I’ve debated every willing decarcerationist I’ve come across… perhaps the good judge would like to put his brilliance on display in a respectful exchange of ideas. The invitation has been extended to him. Hope he accepts. Perhaps you can reach out and encourage him.

One of the problems with people like Judge Rowan Wilson—aside from being about as wrong as one can be about criminal justice policy—is that he doesn’t engage with serious people who would vehemently and intelligently disagree with him. Understand that when a school like @CUNYLaw puts these kinds of panels together, the events are almost always designed to create spaces for people on the same side of an issue (the left side) to echo one another and pat themselves on the back. They don’t make room for the prevailing view to be challenged. This is why organizations like the @FedSoc are so important. The truth is that there are many very strong arguments to be made in opposition to the view articulated by the judge. One would think that the countless heinous crimes committed by repeat offenders who could—and should— have been incarcerated rather than on the street would give these people some pause. But that kind of openness to the possibility of being wrong is much less common than it should be among those who’ve never exposed themselves to a meaningful challenge from those who take a different view. But let’s be real for a moment: The problem with the judiciary in New York is *not* that it is too harsh on criminal offenders, but that it is far too lenient. That tendency toward leniency reflected by the comments made during this panel, as well as by the policy environment in which sentencing decisions are made in this state, is deeply misguided and stained by the blood of more crime victims than any sane society should tolerate. If Judge Wilson is up to it, I’d be happy to have a public conversation about the many issues I have with the position he has articulated on matters of criminal justice. nypost.com/2026/03/11/us-…

New York City CAN ban foie gras, state appellate court rules, finding that the state can't block the city from passing a law just because it might hurt some farms upstate. NYC passed the ban in 2019(!). Caught up in courts ever since. And might still be.

Some good notes from Rick Hasen here on the #NY11 court ruling. Also worth noting: this ruling does NOT say that NY-11's lines must remain unchanged this cycle. It just grants a stay of the initial ruling pending the appeal in state court/cert in SCOTUS. (1/2)
